Julia Roberts Speaks Out on Prop 87Julia Roberts made a public statement yesterday while at Mattell Children’s Hospital in Los Angeles in support of California’s Prop 87. Her husband Danny Moder was there to support her. Says Julia, “We’re all victims of this state’s tragically poor air quality. California has the worst air pollution in the nation.” TMZ reported the story, along with a video, that is not currently working and Perez Hilton has got some pics.

Julia Roberts is also the spokesperson for biodiesel company Earth BioFuels, Inc. - the same company where Willie Nelson and Morgan Freeman sit on the Board of Directors.

Proposition 87 is a proposal to tax oil producers in California, prohibiting them to pass the tax on to consumers. The money raised will fund alternative energy research, production incentives, and education, among other things.

Please educate yourself on your local issues and don’t forget to vote in the upcoming November elections.

  1. Good for Julia Roberts, I saw this list night and was uber-excited! Thanks for posting more about it!

  2. [...] Boy, the celebs are coming out in full-force to let you know which way to vote. Robert Redford has mass-blasted an email speaking out against California’s Proposition 90. Here is a short excerpt: Prop 90 is the single most dangerous threat that has ever been leveled at our state’s environment. As a native and long-time resident of California, I don’t say that lightly. Prop 90 will make it virtually impossible for our state and local governments to do their job of protecting the wildlife, wild lands and other natural resources that make California the special place that it is.   [...]

  3. [...] Starring in his first commercial since running for President, Al Gore is pushing hard to support Proposition 87 up for vote soon in California. The oil companies have contributed nearly $60 million dollars to stop the bill from going through, but activists — including celebrities like Julia Robers and hollywood producers like Stephen Bing — have raised close to $50 million to counteract the attack. Proposition 87 would tax companies drilling for oil in California until the state has generated $4 billion. The money would be set aside for loans, grants and subsidies to promote alternative fuels and more energy-efficient vehicles. Below is Gore’s commercial: [...]

  4. “Says Julia, “We’re all victims of this state’s tragically poor air quality.”

Most likely the result of all the hot air emanating from all the haut monde spots like Hollywood, San Francisco and Sacramento, et al. Julia, dearest, do keep quiet and the air quality will improve…markedly!

  5. [...] We worked on Proposition 87, the most costly ballot initiative ever, so we saw first-hand how oil interests like Chevron manipulated voters and spent upwards of $100 million to defeat it…to defeat a tax on the extraction of oil that every other oil-producing state has in place, including Texas. As Jones points out, though, the defeat was inevitable without working-class support. The approach was seriously flawed because we thought that money, celebrity, and upper-middle-class support was all it needed to pass. [...]
