Julia Spreads the Green on Oprah

November 30th 2006

Julia Roberts & OprahJulia Roberts was on Oprah this week, promoting the December 15 release of Charlotte’s Web along with Dakota Fanning and Cedric the Entertainer. After covering the film and motherhood, Oprah moved Julia to a new topic – Green.

Julia actually said that motherhood is a big reason why she started thinking more critically about the environment and global warming saying, “What is the world going to be like for all of our children?”

Vanity FairJulia was, of course, featured on the green cover of Vanity Fair back in May along with George Clooney, Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and Al Gore. She says she drives a hybrid and recycle grocery bags in addition to bringing her own canvas bags. (Thanks for the tip on the bags, Callie.) (BYOBag, Julia!) She also quotes Jack Johnson’s song from Curious George, “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle.”

However, the hybrid isn’t good enough for Julia anymore. She wants greener. “I want something that runs on vegetable oil… I think it’s a small price to pay, to smell like a French fry. I just need to get the big one that I can fit my kids in.” I’m actually surprised she hasn’t gone biodiesel yet, considering her new position.

She became a spokesperson for Earth Biofuels, Inc. back in July, a biodiesel fuel company on which Willie Nelson and Morgan Freeman sit on the board. Through that organization, she is also involved in a program called School Bus America, trying to switch school buses to run on biodiesel. “Our kids are inside those buses where it’s so much more toxic and deadly,” she says. “And it’s so easy. All these buses can be changed over to biodiesel and vegetable oil.”

Other famous biodieselers? Daryl Hannah, Mandy Moore, and Woody Harrelson. Go veggie oil!

Thanks for the tip, Lori who told us: “It was a bounty of eco talk from the world famous Julia. If they’re into it, I think they need to shout about it, to get their fans
interested…” We think so, too!

  1. On the show, she said she used canvas bags, but recycles her plastic ones too. Even the greenest of us sometimes forget our canvas bags or don’t have them with us 100% of the time. Let’s not rag on every environmentalist that’s not perfect.

  2. Diane Lane went biodiesel, too. She talked about it on Ellen. then Ellen gave her a demijohn of vegetable oil for the car.

  3. Thanks so much for the info, Callie. Unfortunately, I didn’t get to see the program and only had the info that was on the website. I’ll update the post now.

  4. Pete, I forgot about that! Here’s our post on the Diane Lane from September: http://www.ecorazzi.com/?p=161
