When it comes to the fashion world’s glitterati, you can either make it or break it at New York Fashion Week. This year, the trendiest event to hit this side of the fashion industry is set to go global, with more than 3,000 people already queueing up for tickets for the eight-day Mercedez Benz Fashion Show, one of the highlight of the multi-million dollar fashion fest.

With 238 shows going on simultaneously, and 77 of them at different areas of Bryant Park, a number of designers have decided to use the fashion runway as a platform for their cause. For instance, menswear maven Mark Bouwer has announced that, following the examples set by brands such as BCBG, Yeohlee, and Baby Phat, he has decided that his show will be sans fur and wool in order to emphasize his stand on the humane treatment of animals. Of course, it could also be because PETA is his sponsor.

Another California designer, Linda Loudermilk, has long been known for using eco-friendly material in her clothes, such as bamboo. But before you have visions of far-off places in the East and steaming Chinese tea, take note: this designer’s cool concept for this year was inspired by the Arctic and the Northern Lights. The collection reflects “the hope that we are entering a new age of taking care of our planet,” she says.

So I guess whoever said that the fashion industry can be so shallow and self-centered might be choking on their Cristal right now, or tripping over their Manolo Blahniks, because it looks like the fashion industry’s makeover is well on its way to an eco-friendly start.
