All you have to do is join–and win–the Virgin Earth Challenge. To be more specific, you have to come up with a practical way to get rid of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. This competition was launched yesterday by Virgin’s boss Sir Richard Branson and Al Gore.

Speaking at the launch, the Virgin boss said that, “The Earth cannot wait 60 years. I want a future for my children and my children’s children. The clock is ticking. Unless we can devise a way of actually removing the CO2 from the earth’s atmosphere, we will lose half of all species on earth.”

The judges of the competition include Branson and Gore as well as scientist James Lovelock and conservationist Tim Flannery, among others.

Several groups have already responded to the challenge. Ecorestoration company Planktos is planning to restore plankton and to launch a tree-planting program that aims to plant millions of trees all around the countries of the European Union. The Speculist has also proposed several solutions to the problem.

I wonder if there will be any celebrities who will take on this challenge. Who do you think would be the most likely celeb to respond to this? But anyway, I hope whoever wins this contest won’t use the prize money to start buying private jets, enormous vehicles and houses.

Please contact professor Tim Flannery about my possible solutions. I find it rather difficult to directly contact Richard Branson by email.

    Thanks,
