Wolfgang Puck Turns Cruelty-Free

Animal rights supporters, rejoice! Chef Wolfgang Puck is joining the fight and is saying no to foie gras and yes to cruelty-free cooking. He’s not just concerned with the welfare of ducks though, but with all animals raised for food too.

He has directed his three companies, which together fed more than 10 million people in 2006, to buy eggs only from chickens not confined to small cages. Veal and pork will come from farms where animals are not confined in crates, and poultry meat will be bought from farmers using animal welfare standards higher than those put forth by the nation’s largest chicken and turkey producers. Mr. Puck has also vowed to use only seafood whose harvest does not endanger the environment or deplete stocks.

He’s now working with the Humane Society of the United States to help make sure that farming practices see some positive changes. The article also says that Wolfgang is just one of a small group of top chefs who are refusing to serve foie gras. The more chefs start supporting animal welfare issues, the better. Foie gras fanatics won’t be pleased, though I’m sure even without their support, Wolfgang Puck will still be pretty big, especially now that he’s sure to get a lot more fans with his involvement with animal rights.
