You might think we’re reaching a bit by including a polar bear in our list of daily stories, but the truth is Knut has been all over the place lately and we just can’t resist. Ladies and gents, I’d like to introduce you to our first ‘green’ celebrity animal.
From the cover of Vanity Fair’s Green Issue with Leonardo DiCaprio to a recent announcement of new book deal, Knut is growing in popularity and becoming something of a symbol of global warming’s affects on species besides our own.
Out of Australia come reports that New York-based Turtle Pond Publications and the Berlin Zoo have signed a deal for the publishing rights to Knut. From the article,
“‘Knut has come along at a time when the environment is front and center of everyone’s agenda and he stands out as an environmental icon that can reach young and old,’ Hatkoff said in a telephone interview.
‘We are hoping that a little polar bear can help the world de-polarize the complex issues … and to raise awareness of the issues in the global climate debate.’
Hatkoff said publishers Scholastic would release his book, entitled ‘Knut: How one little polar bear captivated the world,’ with Knut’s story and photographs first in German and then in English later this year.
So, on one hand, we’ve got an animal kept in a zoo being exploited for profit. On the other, we have an opportunity for Knut to touch others and spread a message of climate change awareness for others to embrace. What’s your take on this?
