clooney.gifWe knew this party was going to be big — but did anyone figure on it being THIS big? Taking advantage of the deep pockets of the rich and filthy rich in Cannes for the annual film festival, Brad Pitt, George Clooney, Matt Damon, and Don Cheadle hosted a party to raise money for relief in Darfur. Totals coming in say that they managed to rake in $9.2 million. You can also add this rumor to the event: Steven Spielberg apparently donated 1$ million of his own cash. After his passionate letter to the President of China last month, this isn’t too far-fetched a possibility.

The celebrity bash took place aboard a luxury yacht off Cannes with tickets just to get in at $25K a piece. From the article,

“‘We’re not politicians. We’re not able to make decisions. We’re not able to do anything except bring attention to something, and that’s the thing we can do,’ Clooney said.

‘Kids are dying from diarrhea … that just shouldn’t be in this day and age, and it’s that kind of thing that needs to be changed. Enough is enough,’ Pitt added.”

It’s nice to see celebrities taking advantage of a setup like the French Rivera to bring attention to the conflict in the Sudan. The millions already in the bag for the NGO founded by the stars — Not On Our Watch — will aid hundreds of thousands uprooted by the conflict. After the festival, Oceans’s producer Jerry Weintraub is planning benefits for the film’s US premieres in Las Vegas and Chicago next month.
