File this one under “Rumor”, but the Internet is lighting up with gossip that Leonardo DiCaprio is considering taking the idea behind Live Earth and applying it to the hip hop, rap, and urban youth scene. According to Bill Zwecker of The Chicago Sun-Times, “the actor has been quietly meeting with some major players on the hip-hop and rap scenes — including Jay-Z, Q-Tip and Russell Simmons — hoping to expand environmental awareness in our largely African-American inner cities.”
DiCaprio, who has just signed to team up with Oscar winner Russell Crowe for the thriller, Body of Lies, is very interested in approaching those areas of the country that might not either enjoy the Live Earth music, or have access to a computer or TV to view the event. A series of well-publicized concerts revolving around environmental themes would help to get the word out to new demographics.
Obviously, getting the right people involved –like Jay-Z and other icons of the industry — is massively important in adding some cred behind the music and mission. If DiCaprio is in fact involved, and could help unite this powerful slice of the music industry, greater awareness would no doubt result. Live Earth may only be the beginning…
