Celebrity CEOs Less Than Green Outside The Office

July 3rd 2007

There are several powerful CEOs out there that hold as much sway and attention as some A-lister celebrities. The result is they’re on our radar and just as vulnerable to the spotlight as anyone else. Please welcome CEO of TIVO, Tom Rogers, and Rolling Stone Magazine Owner, Jann Wenner to the club! Believe me, this isn’t one you necessarily want to join.

What the hell am I talking about? Big Carbon Footprints. These guys have ‘em — and aren’t necessarily doing anything about them. First up is Wenner — who is currently splitting his vacation time between Athens, Greece and his home in the Rockies. Using a private jet.  According to the site Radar, one would have to drive a Hummer H3 200,000 miles to equal his output in carbon over the next several weeks. Generally, this type of lavish transportation wouldn’t catch our attention; however,  Wenner hosted a screening of An Inconvenient Truth, and also recently edited a “green issue” of Rolling Stone. You’d think the guy might at least feel the green enough to go with commercial first class.

One guy flying commercial — but WAY too much — is CEO of TIVO, Tom Rogers. Falling under the category of “extreme commuter”, Rogers gets on a plane twice a week to fly from his home in New York to his job in California. That’s a 3,000 mile jaunt to work. “He hops on a plane like someone hops on the Metro-North,” commented his wife, Sylvia. Someone TIVO An Inconvenient Truth, Live Earth, or Sundance Channel’s THE GREEN for this guy.  According to Terrapass, his weekly commute generates roughly 3,849 lbs CO2. Weekly!

Gentlemen, please, find another way. Reduce your air travel. Tom, there’s a fantastic thing called video conferencing that might come in handy. Or move! Jann, first class on commercial flights is really nice. Trust me. The food is excellent. At the very least, gents, please offset your actions. While it’s great to sit in the lap of luxury, don’t screw everything else around it.

  1. Great post. I recently posted on TiVo’s CEO as well. Its amazing that he is willing to fly 3,000 miles two times a week. I guess he has the same attitude a lot of millionaires have…that the rules of personal fiscal and environmental responsibility doesn’t apply to them. Thanks for calling them out. I hope they read your post. I’ve linked to it from CEO SMACK.
