Ecorazzi went Live Earth crazy – we attended the event, both in the stands and backstage. We’ve blogged like never before. And to top it all off, we teamed up with The Lazy Environmentalist to give away free Live Earth tickets. We asked listeners & readers to send in their eco-tips. Here are the winners…
Kelly gave us her “bad-ass” tip:
I live in a tiny little shoebox apartment in Washington, DC, so I don’t use that much energy as is, but the a/c unit in our living room window is definitely an energy hog. Sure, I insulate the thing to make sure all the hot stays out and the cool stays in, but I hate running it more than necessary. To cut down our energy costs (and honestly, just cause I like to…) I’m naked pretty much all the time I’m home. Shaded open windows and a little fan are all i need to be quite content even in DC’s notoriously humid summers. Okay, so this may not work for everyone, but it highlights a major point: that we should dress according to the climate, rather than adjusting the climate to our style of dress. Think of all the energy that could be saved in freezing cold office buildings because of the artificial need to wear suits and ties if the corporate execs said “Hey, its hot out, wear shorts if you wanna today,” and let the temperature remain a comfortable 71 or 72 instead of a freezing 65 degrees F. You’ve probably heard people jokingly say, “Conserve water–shower with a friend!” well, a similarly cheeky slogan for energy conservation could be “conserve energy– go naked!” I know I’m game!
Joe, also from DC, sent us in this tip:
Start a carpooling Facebook group at your local college for people whose home is in the same area as you. Then you have a pool of people to arrange rides with during holidays, or any other time you want to go home. This easily saves 3-4x the carbon emissions, congestion, price of driving, and boredom at the wheel!
Want to get started on being more eco in your life? The Live Earth people want you to sign the pledge. Stay tuned to hear from the winners on their experience at Live Earth New York! (Oh, sorry Zach Braff…New Jersey!)
