Virgin Festival Wants to Be the Only Virgin in Town. Concert Aims to Be Tree-Free.

July 20th 2007

Virgin Festival 2007

The Virgin Festival, scheduled for August 4 & 5 at the Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore will feature the same headliners as Live Earth New York – The Police & The Smashing Pumpkins, but will show many more acts overall including Ben Harper and the Innocent Criminals, Beastie Boys, Incubus, Amy Winehouse, Wu Tang Clan, and 311.

Virgin is asking all attendees to “Green It Like You Mean It”. The two day concert has teamed up with Daryl Hannah & Spitfire Agency to green the weekend music festival. Look forward to:

BYOB - that’s bottle, not booze. Bring your own empty or factory sealed bottle of water, and refill it throughout the festival at the filling stations. If they do this right, it will be a huge success and save thousands of plastic bottles, as well as a huge chunk of change for the fans.

Compost – All of the food waste will be composted nearby in local farms. ( So eat up!)

Tree-free – All of the paper products will be 100% recycled paper…even the toilet paper. No virgin trees, baby. Yeah!

In addition to these initiatives, compostable plates & utensils will be used, clean energy like biodiesel & solar will be utilized, and the use of mass transit highly encouraged.

Also look forward to the RE*Generation Gallery to be on display. Twenty-one 24″x24″ wood panels, each designed by a different artist to represent “a generation helping its own”. After the concert, the art will go up for auction.

Tickets are still available: general admission for the two days is $175, or go just Saturday or Sunday for $98.

Of course, you could also get in free – volunteers are still needed. You need to be 18 or older, willing to work 7 hours each day, care about the environment, and not mind getting your hands dirty / working around trash. It may be a weird job description, but I saw a similar concept executed at Live Earth and it WORKS. Just think about it: you will get in FREE and you’ll be able to help green the festival at the same time. Virgin Festival (then click Experience, then Green It.)
