Mikhail Gorbachev Promotes Luggage To Save The Planet

The last person you expect to hear announced as the new face of Louis Vuitton is Mikhail Gorbachev. Okay, perhaps Carrot Top would be the absolute last person — or Richard Simmons — but Gorbachev pushing luggage is unexpected. It’s like Bush in a Godiva chocolate ad or Cheney backing Prada.

Of course, as life after politics has proven with such all-stars as Bill Clinton and Al Gore, it’s never too late to capitalize on your own popularity. Thankfully, Gorbachev is appearing in this ad (shot by the great Ann Leibovitz) to support Al Gore’s The Climate Project and Green Cross International. In return for his services (and those of Steffi Graf and Andre Agassi), Vuitton will donate an undisclosed sum to the two environmental charities.

For those of you playing along at home, Green Cross International is the European version of Global Green USA. Both were founded by Gorbachev, with Cross coming online in ’92 after the Earth Summit in Rio De Janeiro. Hit the jump for more on the images.
