America’s favorite indestructible cheerleader, Hayden Panettiere, has been making her 18th birthday publicity rounds this week, joking on Letterman about how she’s old enough to buy cigarettes and have the biggest party for herself ever. Great.
Fortunately, she’s also taking her voting-age opportunity by being a spokesperson for Declare Yourself, a nonpartisan, non-profit campaign aimed to “energize and empower every eligible 18-year-old in America to register and vote in the 2008 presidential election.” Panettiere joins fellow spokesperson America Ferrera and “Friends of the Project,” which includes a long long list of celebrities, media companies, public organizations, and more.
Founded by writer/producer Norman Lear in 2003, DeclareYourself was born from a nationwide tour of an original copy of the Declaration of Independence Lear had purchased. Filled with pretty hilarious PSAs and accessible information including how and where to register, school programs, political news, and of course, the Declare Yourself MySpace page, this voting “one-stop shop” hopes to bring young voters to the polls the way P. Diddy‘s “Vote or Die” campaign seemed to scare them away…
Stefani Newman will be absentee voting this year, and will blog about it at her site, teensygreen.com.
