The Humane Society of the United States has launched a campaign it hopes will help end dogfighting in Georgia by offering up to $5,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of any person involved in dogfighting.

The increase in the reward — previously $2,500 — was made possible through a donation from the Holland M. Ware Charitable Foundation based in Hogansville.

“Dogfighting has no place in a civilized society,” said John Goodwin, manager of animal fighting for the society. He announced the increased reward at a news conference Thursday in the state Capitol.

He said the reward for tips — and keeping the tipsters anonymous — “will bring people out of the woodwork” reporting dogfighting because they will know they won’t be identified to the public.

The society also said Norred & Associates, an Atlanta-based corporate security agency, will set up a toll-free hotline for dogfighting reports and forward the tips to the appropriate law enforcement agency. The hotline number is 877-847-4787.

“Our ultimate goal is to eliminate dogfighting,” said Greg Norred of the Norred agency. “This hotline is a way to have them report confidentially.”

Terry Norris, executive vice president of the Georgia Sheriffs’ Association, said it also will provide a $5,000 reward for information leading to a conviction.
