Today the Story of Stuff featuring activist (and soon to be potentially a green celeb herself) Annie Leonard, was released. This is a 20 minute web-video that explains where our “stuff” comes from and goes to when it dies…and every step in between. The holiday season is the perfect time to launch such a story. It’s a scary tale. I think the essence of it is captured in the teaser clip below.
The thing that strikes me most is something that I have wondered for a long time. Why IS stuff so cheap? Who IS paying for it? Sometimes we think that fair-trade, organic, and locally made items are too expensive. I think perhaps it’s just the opposite. Everything else is just too cheap.
Watch the entire film and let us know what you think. It really makes you think about all of the stuff that we buy, and if we really need it. And if we do need stuff, where it should be coming from.
