I was fortunate to have spent a weekend with Richard St.Barbe Baker, the legendary tree planter, and learned all about permaculture, back in 1969, at the home of Muriel and Hugh Dowding, my grandparents.
The Ghurkha deal will bring us Brits closer to Nepal, where, as a result of recent instability, thousands have sought refuge in Kathmandu city, and the remains of once-beautiful boulevards of trees are now being hacked below the stump for firewood by the desperate poor.
Garbage lines the river, and with air pollution and chaotic planning, their valuable tourist industry is gravely threatened.
Kathmandu needs help to restore its priceless beauty.

Just after Joanna Lumley made a deal for the Ghurkhas to live in Britain, , she appeared on John-a-fan Woss, the BBC celeb chatshow host, and said she supports the green initiative to plant trees,(Johnny asked about her political leanings.)
Interestingly, I have been writing about my recent trip to Kathmandu, where the imperative for tree planting is paramount.

When I was a kid we used to make placemats out of Christmas cards. Basically, we would cut large circles out of the cards (circles whose diameters were about the size of the card's height), glue them together into a sort of cloud-shaped collage, then laminate them. Presto! Placemats that are easy to wipe off and a sort of creative way of saving all the holiday cards you really love.
