It’s Fashion Week In NY. Get Your Game Face On.

Yesterday marked the beginning of Fashion Week 2008 in New York City and we’re getting ready to receive scoops and info from our spies out in the field.

Riding the wave of including more sustainable materials in collections, we’re expecting darker shades of green from designers across the board. From the get-go, the Earth Pledge FutureFashion show that hit last night featured many top-tier designers – including Versace and Bottega Venetta – and their organic-or sustainable-fabric styles on a platform made of raw-cut kumbuk wood from Sri Lanka. After the event, that wood is to be recycled and turned into furniture. Fabulous, darling! (We’ve got more on this event coming in a follow-up!)

Aveda will be handing out reusable aluminum water bottles backstage at Rag & Bone, Thakoon, 3.1 Phillip Lim and Rodarte. Gift bags, as expected, are also getting the green treatment. Rodarte created an organic fabric scarf to place in a tote bag made of recycled billboard from sponsor Lexus that will be given out to those in its front row. (Note to those in the field: Bribe your way to the front row!) Said Earth Pledge’s Leslie Hoffman,

“Designers have all embraced this enthusiastically. They’ve asked a lot of questions, which is an opportunity for us to learn from them as well as teach them. They’ve all been interested to see the possible materials. One designer even took the carbon footprint of transport into consideration and put the outfit on a flight someone was already going on,” she said.”

Of course, we’re bound to run into the ugly side of Fashion Week as well — from animals skins to fur accessories and coats. Ugh.

Keep your Uggs on, this is going to be a wild next couple days!
