Say what you want, but PETA has balls. Huge balls. Huge responsibly neutered, Hollywood Sign balls. Check this out:

The People For The Ethical Treatment of Animals want to add a little vegetarian bling to Hollywood….or at least to the Hollywood sign. Rumor has it that the animal rights organization is thinking about renting Cahuenga Peak — a 138-acre plot just to the west of the Hollywood sign — and mounting their own GO VEG sign directly next to the famous landmark. What does this mean? Well, instead of the peak simply stating, “Hollywood” it will now boldly order, “Hollywood GO VEG!”

Even if this does happen it will only be temporary, as the lot costs $22 million dollars to buy. Oh man, I think this is totally hysterical. What do you think? Speak up Ecorazzi readers and tell us your thoughts on PETA’s new prank. Comment away, bloggers. Comment away!

I have some opinions of PETA to begin with. But what will the sign be made of? Virgin Wood? Cardboard? Recycled wood? paint? (I assume but could be wrong – maybe they’re spraying it with a powder coat or something that isn’t on the tip of my tongue)

What will be disrupted so that they can pull off their prank? Wouldn’t their money and the earth’s resources be put to better use by more of their ads?

This is genuis! Any responsible environmentalist should be vegan anyway (seeing as how, according to the UN, the meat industry causes more gobal warming than all the cars, trucks, planes, ships, trains and–gasp!–SUVs in the world COMBINED). Great idea, PETA!

This is ridiculous! Waste of time, effort, and money! Why would you want to ruin something so many people go to take pictures of… it is selfish! People can choose, and People eating tasty animals can promote their stuff too…. but to be selfish bastards whom enjoy wasting better spent money? PETA, you’ve dumbfounded me again with your stupidity! Congratulations, never thought it was possible…

  • http://shoelala.wordpress.com ShoeLaLa

well, it’s better than most of their ‘pranks’…

i think it would be fun, short-term. but long term, it’s kind of heritage desecration…

  • http://kwanzoo.com oakling

Hmm. Seems to me that the flaw is that plenty of people don’t know what “Go Veg” even means. Go relax and hang out? Go eat vegetables? I bet that they want it to be shorter because it’s easier to put up and could mean either vegetarian or vegan, but it’s too potentially confusing for the amount of money and effort that it seems like it would take.

Love it, love it so much.

  • MacKenzie Budd

Vegetarianism isn’t going to solve global warming and carnivores aren’t going to stop existing so PETA should stop complaining and put their efforts into greening the meat industry. Animals should always be treated humanely, even if we consume them in the end. PETA needs to takes us back to the roots of why we raise ‘meat’ in the first place.

  • oya

I have to agree with oakling. Even though I know who’s doing it and what they mean by it… it still reads as ‘Go Veg’. First, ‘go hang out’, second ‘go vegtarian or vegan’. Third, maybe, ‘Go dude nick-named Veg’ (wow, what an impressive frat prank).

There will surely be lots of press explaining the Whos and Whats so word will spread and people will know. Which leads to Emily’s comment… I hope they are thoughtful in the material choices.

And finally, to Anonymous and all the self-righteous Anonymous’ out there… wow! Chill out. PETA is hardly a group which can be accused of being ‘selfish bastards’. Is it such a loss if your photo of the HOLLYWOOD sign is more unique than Grandma’s? Open up and be a part of the present moment!

If the words HOLLYWOOD and all the related symbolism is so precious to you that none should dare expand it’s boundaries why are you even reading this blog?

Overall I’m sure Hollywood will be receptive to any and all attention shined upon itself. And maybe some celebrities will say some meaningful things… so Go PETA, Go Veg!

  • Yukino

Well. I can certainly appreciate the ‘aesthetic’ and the whole ‘prank’ value of this, but I think these 22+ million US freakin dollars can be put to MUCH better use.

  • bee

Their money can be utilized better. I’m all for Peta, but this seems mostly just for publicity and not really fighting for the rights they believe in.

INTERESTING to see if this is worth as much as they will be spending..

I agree with MacKenzie Budd. I live in Italy where no one even recycles so attacking meat eaters is pretty much pushing their luck. Focus son the fur industry in Hollywood, it’s way more outrageous.

    P.S. Thank “God” for vegans!

  • parrish

This convo is getting spicy! Thanks for all your opinions Green Heads…keep em coming.

  • ehlm

The plot of land in question is actually to the left of the hollywood sign not the right. It would read “Go Veg Hollywood” and currently the town of hollywood is raising money to purchase the land from Chicago developers who are planning to build luxury estates on the land. SO to me, PETA don’t got a chance in hell.

  • parrish

If I’m the Hollywood sign and I look to my left then it would be Hollywood Go Veg. If, let’s say, you’re the Hollywood sign and I’m looking at the land while talking to you then it would read Go Veg Hollywood. Hm? Sorry Ehlm, I think it’s Hollywood Go Veg.

  • leftofemma

Hollywood and LA have tons of vegan, vegetarian, and raw food restaurants, so I doubt that any of the locals will misinterpret the sign. I think that enough people in the world know what vegetarianism is to understand the sign.

I agree that getting rid of fur in Hollywood would be a better endeavor. A sign is not the best use of PETA’s resources, but I’d much rather that they spend the money on a Go Veg sign instead of the usual, more than slightly sexist ad campaigns.

  • Darky

This might be big news for the old hollywood sign…poor fans will be mad because they f*cked up the “Hollywood” BS….anyway….I think this is good and bad, good because even though some MAY be a little confused by it or hate it, at least some might even ask what it means and find veganism interesting then discover a world of abuse they were eating, and change….you never know…And bad because….well who cares about the sign fans? This is more important. Everyone should start taking veganism more seroiusly. I hope this will make people change…but i doubt it will as much as people will be laughing at it, unfortunatly. :\
So yeah…I have mixed feelings. hehehe. I hope they do it…Theres a lot of people in hollywood (and other celebs really getting into the Animal rights fight and veganismso far). Hope this works if they do it. Ahh blahhh I sound silly now!! hhehehhe :O

  • Niran

That is so awesome! Go PETA, Go! Go! Go!
http://www.GoVeg.com – Its good for u, for the animals, for the earth & eventually veganism will end world hunger!

  • nms

I think it is a waste for a few reasons.

    1. This type of promotion does not influence behavior change. I’ve done research on communication and behavior change for environmental causes and this doesn’t change anyone’s mind or result in people adopting new behaviors.

    2. This stunt will not get mainstream positive press. Although, I guess they feel that bad publicity is better than no publicity. That is the PETA way.

    3. It is “preaching to the choir.” Only the “converted” will appreciate it. Others will feel it is wacky, tacky and an eye sore.

  • Chris

The Cahuenga Peak being located WEST of the Hollywood sign, I doubt that a sign put up there would make the “famous landmark” say “hollywood go veg”.
West means “left”. The PETA sign will be BEFORE the Hollywood sign.
Furthermore, the Cahuenga Peak not the hill where the hollywood sign is located. People will be able to make the difference.

  • http://www.ecorazzi.com michael

Details, details. Next time, we’ll bring a compass…

  • Kristie

PETA makes me want to eat meat just to spite them. Why won’t they learn that propaganda is so passe? You can’t change anyone’s mind by telling them to. I guess it’s supposed to be cute but that’s definitely the wrong approach, in my opinion, and I think the only way PETA can “spread the love” at this point is to stop reproducing and stop wasting everyone’s time and money.

  • Uncle B

If all Americans were forced to go veggie, plant front lawns to potatoes and bio-gas all sewage it mnight solve global warming and a diminishing return on the dollar. If we made Vodka from the surplus patatoes we could all ger drunker than Hell for free, an nobody would giva a damn anymore! None of this will happen ! Pets will wave its silly ass in the air until they get tired and go home to steak dinnersw in air-conditioned cars! Who is kidding who here? America will follow this tragic course to the bitter end! and we sill adapt slowly to the changes necessary to keep what we want and reject things we are tire of, right to the last speck of wakmart crap on the shelf!
