There was an amendment passed to the 2006 Agriculture budget that removed funding for inspectors in slaughter houses in the US, but it was bypassed by a “pay for inspections’ program introduced as a work around by the USDA and that program is the subject of a suit that deemed it illegal at the lower and appeal level but is still being contested to the Supreme Court (last I heard).

The anti-slaughter movement has been trying to get a federal ban passed for years. It is called the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act (HR.503 / S.311). That is the bill being cosponsored by McCain, Clinton and Obama. It would close the borders but is being blocked in the Senate by none other than Senator Larry Craig (of Minneapolis men’s room fame).

And as to slaughter having any saving, grace it has none. We have two beautiful horses from slaughter. One was saved by the rescue Another Chance for Horses at an auction where she had been bought by a kill buyer, and another that was actually on the kill floor when the Cavel plant was shut down and was saved by HSUS.

Horse slaughter is America’s dirty little secret.

The horse thing sounds good, but then I also read (in one of Jeffrey Steingarten’s books) that in countries where horses are raised for food (Holland?) they are treated much better than they are here. Are we going about this all wrong? On the other hand, it’s not like Americans are going to want to eat horse meat anytime soon.
