I think a fine would be going to far. And chutneycarnival is right. Our taste buds are so globalized that I think it would be unrealistic to expect people to eat locally grown foods all the time. Case in point: I am originally from the Virgin Islands, and I love plantain and some of the fish that you can only find in the Caribbean. I prefer to eat locally grown when I can, but I do defer from that for some meals. Restaurants using only locally grown foods would be in quite a predicament: constantly changing menus frequently to reflect what is in season with customers not knowing what to expect is not likely to be great for business. Again, I prefer locally grown, but if not, I try to make sure the foods I eat are organic and/or sustainably harvested.

i think that society eats foreign food way too often just as it eats meat too often and cheese and chocolate and big macs too often.
a fine would be over the top, education is the answer.

it is ridiculous to suggest that a fine should be imposed because his menus would not be what they are without imports. just as everything else is globalised, so are the taste buds. furthermore, with so many immigrants in the UK, he is suggesting censorship on food.

if you can find what you need local – great- but sometimes a dish calls for yummy plantains and if you love plantains, you’ve just got to have them!
