The Bachelor Teams With HSUS To Promote Spaying And Neutering

Matt Grant, the first-ever international bachelor on ABC’s The Bachelor, has teamed up with the Humane Society of the US to raise awareness on the issue of spaying and neutering pets. “Spaying and neutering is good for animals, it’s good for you and, most importantly, it saves lives,” Grant said, referring to the millions of dogs and cats who are euthanized in the nation’s shelters each year.     Well, newer studies say early spay/neuter is NOT good for pets. There are a lot more cancers they can develop than those that are prevented by spay/neuter. Dogs do not develop fully emotionally or physically until 1-1.5 years, or longer in the giant breeds. Doing the procedure prior to full development affects behavior, temperament, and growth negatively. Too bad the bachelor doesn’t do his own research instead of buying into the AR hype.

    Meh. I have to disagree. One of the main reasons we spay/neuter pets is to keep populations under control. Otherwise, there would be many more lives not just faced with cancer, but with starvation, homelessness, and disease.

    I’m not saying that the act of spaying and neutering an animal should not be researched, but in my experience it has never hurt the more than 20+ pets I’ve had the honor of calling family members over my lifetime. All lived healthy, long lives.

    I’d rather have that than to fear the act of spaying/neutering, only to have my dog and cats reproduce and their offspring potentially suffer.

    Responsible owners don’t let their dogs reproduce. The shelters are full of ADULT dogs that had homes. The problem is with people dumping dogs that they no longer want, not that there are too many puppies. For the record, I do spay/neuter my dogs, but after they have grown up. Performance dogs especially can be affected if proper growth and form has not been achieved. If we have an overpopulation problem, why were 300,000 homeless dogs brought into this country? Why aren’t we placing our own first? There are shelters that are importing dogs from other shelters because they don’t have enough to meet demand. This is a better solution than euthanizing. There are too many shelters that are only into the business of euthanizing dogs, and are not looking into better alternatives. Check out Nathan Winograd.

    I am all for promoting spay and neutering but I am not making it mandatory. Were will all of us animals lovers get out pets in 10 years if they are all fixed? They bring so much joy to our lives. I can’t imagine life without them.

    HSUS makes no secret of their having the goal of eradicating all domestic (farm and pet) animals. Neuter HSUS–play no role in helping eradicate domestic animals. Write the companies whose ads are on bachelor. Boycott buying all their products and drop their PR and customer service departments a note saying you’ll never buy any of their products until this is changed.

    The “star” of a reality show reads from a card provided by HSUS and I’m supposed to think he has any idea of what he’s talking about. If this is how you get your science and make decisions on your pet’s welfare – perhaps you aren’t smart enough to own a pet.

    Spay and neuter if you wish, but it should never be mandatory.
