Ready for some more eco-themed movies?
I did a little exploring on the topic of green films and unearthed two previously unknown (at least to the Raz) films that embrace a green message.
The first one you’ve no doubt been exposed to in the form of trailers and marketing — Pixar’s WALL-E. As seen in previews, Earth is trashed and a little robot called WALL-E (which stands for Waste Allocation Load Lifter Earth-class) is the only thing left to clean up the mess. Here’s a small synop:
“WALL-E was programmed to help clean up earth because in the future humans have completely trashed the planet through consumerism, rampant, unchecked consumerism. The Earth was covered with so much trash that the humans had to leave the planet on space liners while robots were left behind to clean up the planet and make Earth habitable again. Unfortunately 700 years go by and the humans never return.”
Apparently, WALL-E goes on some great space adventure which eventually leads to a solution to the Earth’s trash problem, paving the way for the return of humans and a happy environment.
Unfortunately, SkyNet then becomes aware and unleashes the Terminators. At least, that’s what I’m imagining an evil Pixar might do with the ending…
The next film is Atlantis Rising — a live-action adaptation from a comic series of the same name. Steven Spielberg’s Dreamworks has picked up the rights and production is underway on the “classic us-vs.-them alien invasion movie”. According to the Hollywood Reporter, producer Mitchell Rosenberg said the project to him echoed “the global debate on our impact to the environment.” Here’s another brief synop:
“In “Atlantis,” seismic disturbances at sea force world militaries to investigate the deepest part of the world’s ocean, where an underground civilization emerges to wage war with planet Earth.”
Sounds like a sequel to The Abyss to me….Cameron, call your lawyers!
