I recommend going through a breed specific rescue who has familiarity with that particular breed. I've seem plenty of poodles and even Chinese Cresteds in kill shelters, rescue groups and on craigslist. (I have also seen hairless cats in kill shelters, rescues, and craigslist) People abandon every kind of pet, purebred, mutt, big, small, mammal and otherwise.
