Animal Planet’s “Whale Wars” Looks To Kick Serious Ass
Network to get a bit edgier with new series

Animal Planet is pulling back the curtain on what exactly happens when the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society heads out to antagonize the Japanese Whaling fleet. The result is a new television series premiering in November called Whale Wars. As The Daily Green revealed in their preview of the show, “ships are rammed, stink bombs tossed, anti-whaling declarations are broadcast over loud speakers, and whales are chased to safety.” Sounds pretty intense. Here’s a bit more from the release,
“Sea Shepherd’s 2007-2008 campaign - and the story that WHALE WARS tells - was named Operation Migaloo and was replete with many incidents for the international-born crew. Two of the most notable incidents included the capture of two of its crew - Benjamin Potts and Giles Lane - by one of the Japanese ships, and the gunshot inflicted upon Paul Watson, allegedly fired from one of the Japanese crew, according to Sea Shepherd. The Japanese fell nearly 500 whales short of the season’s quota, and according to Sea Shepherd and its standards, the 2007-2008 campaign was very successful.”
Doesn’t really look like your average Animal Planet show, does it? Whatever helps propel Watson and his Sea Shepherds org into the public eye is fine by us — especially when folks truly see what goes down out on the hunt. Bring on November!

I think that Whale Wars is awesome! I spent some of my summer studying whales peacefully up in Massachusetts with The Lady Maryland. Whales need to be protected from evil whale hunters, and The Sea Sheppard and its crew are doing an amazing job! KEEP KICKING ASS!!!

I dunno about this… I’m a pretty liberal person, but I have a hard time with this show. From what I have seen so far of Paul Watson, I don’t really like the guy, nor have I seen anything so far that makes me respect him.
He is abrasive, stubbornly opinionated, extremely judgmental and manipulative. His comments about his all-volunteer, inexperienced crew being sissies (paraphrasing) for getting sea-sick for what he considers not having the right “mind-set” and completely disregarding a medical and physiological basis for sea-sickness is a case in point. Jesus Christ, dude, you *need* a volunteer crew, and they haven’t been on the seas for 30 friggin’ years, let them get their sea legs, for f@&k sakes! Quit-yer-bitchin abd be greatful that you have people who are willing to put up with you for even five minutes! Shit knows I have a hard enough time listening to you from my living room!
He guilt-tripped that guy into boarding that ship because he damaged the rotor on the helicopter, and got pissy when his volunteers didn’t “jump at the chance” to risk their lives do a degree that meets his own expectations based on his own beliefs. And they even admitted that boarding ships is something that they had *never* attempted in the 30 years they’ve been doing this. On what basis is Mr. Watson entitled to get bent out of shape when people don’t masturbate his superiority complex?
I don’t care *how* you spin this or what your argument or justification is, but you *can’t* say that someone is being held against their will when they volunteered to be held captive in the first place. I’m sorry. But you are not a *hostage* when you voluntarily climb aboard somebody else’s ship for the purpose of being detained. Captain Watson got on the radio and lied about what was happening. Again, whatever your motives, it is really hard to be empathetic with a liar and distorter of the truth. Not only that, but it makes me question his *entire* argument that he is justified in his actions in the first place! His actions make his pill a little too large to swallow!
Lastly, I find it disgusting that Paul Watson gets on the radio and tries to goad the Japanese into a fight, suggests that the translator send the message for the Japanese crew to “kill themselves” and watch everyone on the bridge of the Sea Shepard laugh and jeer and say extraordinarily grotesque things about other human beings. I don’t care how much you disagree with someone, it doesn’t justify that prideful, hateful attitude. Honestly, it is incredibly embarrassing and I think a disservice towards their goal. This is on national television. I feel accosted by just watching this show!
I wish the show was a bit more transparent in what they’re doing. It’s kind of like, “They’re breaking the law, according to us. Just take our word for it. NOW LETS GO (peacefully) BE CONFRONTATIONAL, INSULTING AND RACIST TOWARDS THOSE DAMN JAPS! YYYAAAYYY”

Some what I agree, however, the thought is there and the men and women who risk their lives are the real show. Paul Watson doesn’t give a crap about his fine crew, only about himself. I love the show, but clearly, it would be 100% better without his lack of concern for his own crew. As a professional mariner, I can say these guys are mostly only a terror unto themselves (and their families). While I would agree that whaling under the thin disguise of “research” is repellant, the behavior I’ve seen on this program confirms pretty much everything I’ve ever seen perpetrated by the Sea Shepherds (in person on a couple of occasions). I actually quite enjoy watching the program chronical what is quite likely the worst seamanship, leadership, and tactical execution ever attempted at sea under any banner. 14 year old sea scouts have more credibility than these clowns with thier surplus store sweaters and faux military patches. The Hiesenberg Effect of the camera on the bridge takes meaningless grandstanding and grade school argument to new levels. Now and then you see one of the older crew snap out of the cult kool-aid daze for a minute with the appauling revelation that they have signed on with a ship of fools. Those with any degree of competency to operate a vessel away from the dock are demeaned and marginalized in jealous contempt. The captain apparently got his license from a box of cracker jacks and his media savy from the Soviet Bureau of Propaganda. Every credible maritime organization can use the contents of this program (scrubbed of politics) as direct examples of what NEVER to let happen aboard their ships. Does it raise awareness of whaling again? Kind of. Does it document an effective intervention that is changing behaviors? No. Is it showing the peril of uncompromising ideology standing upon ego and absolutely no competance or intelligence? Beautifully!

The CO is an egomaniac that seems to have a skill of forcing his crew to do things against their better judgement. This show is absurd. It’s a great idea, but the level of incompetence is unreal. The Captain doesn’t seem to understand that he is ultimately responsible for every mistake made on board, thus he passes the blame around to everyone but himself and therefore nothing is redressed.
They promoted the cook to helicopter maintenance or something because he is an aviation buff!?! Surprise! He damaged the helicopter. They lost their Zodiac boat during an exercise, and it was just plain obvious that it was going to happen. They should all have been wearing clown suits. Someone is going to be killed, and when that happens someone (the captain at least) should go to jail for allowing such obvious bungling to continue.

I wathced the show and couldn’t stop laughing at these “starbucks” terrorists. To see these idiots in action is even more funny. Does ANYONE on that damn boat have any seaman ship experience? Wholy crap, just let them sail for a while and eventually they’ll get lost and die. I’ve seen idiots before but these people take the cake. What a crock. The captain was not shot, it was a bad acting job by him and his crew. The “bullet” didn’t even resemble a real bullet. One member of the crew loks at it and proclaims “You were shot” as he looks at the camera with a totally fake look. The crew is terrible. Paul Watson of the Whale Wars series is such a phony, he is totally lying about being shot by the Japanese. I sell body armor to police for a living and if you were shot you would damn well know it immediately but in the series he says casually that he was shot. Soft body armor does stop bullets but not without heavy bruising and in many instances cracked ribs. Paul Watson if full of crap and is just trying to get sympathy from the media and any other koolaid drinking “believers”. The whole series is about him trying to provoke the Japs and then blowing any reaction he gets out of proportion. This is kind of like picking a fight and then when you are punched you cry to the authorities and say the other guy started it. It seems quite cowardly to me. He has lost all credibility with many people I think.
I watched this show for the first time yesterday and im hooked, its like the three stooges of political activism. I mean… they capsize their boat trying to drop it into the water! Its FUBAR! The captain has no idea wtf hes doing! For all of you who are curious as to how this show got put on air, count how many people are making fun of it, the editing team MUST be setting this up to be laughed at intentionally, its just not possible to take these fools seriously. B) In the history of japanese whale *research*(which i admit is bull) only 1000 have been *researched* and C) even if they had torpedo’d the boat, the damages would be way way way under 1 billion, and they just made it slippery… for a while

Lets not marginalize the shooting issue. What Watson is doing is accusing people of attempted murder, a very serious crime. If he wasn’t shot, then he is a fraud and it is really hard to justify any of his prior accusations. Watching it, most people would react with greater emotion after being stung by a bee, than Watson did after apparently getting shot. Yet there have been no subsequent investigations or actions taken since the supposed shooting. once again, Watson is saying, ” Oh just take my word for it.’
For everyone justifying Watson’s actions saying they are not harmful to people, remember that in international waters no one has governing control and the Japanese would be within there rights to repel an attack with force. Yet they don’t? The ‘evil, crazy whalers’ take the high road. Interesting. They can do nothing and the supposed heroes do a fairly good job of making themselves look stupid
As for saving five hundred whales (the number the Japanese fell short of their quota), the Japanese have not filled their quota in several years. I n a four month time frame they show the SS harassing the whalers for a total of like seven days, even if you triple that number to account for editing that would only be 21 days. by that logic the Japanese would need to kill 25 whales a day to fall short by 500. Umm, if they killed twenty five whales a day they would fill their quota in a month, the math doesn’t make sense.
SS has committed crimes for everyone glorifying their actions. These include attaching mines to boats in harbors and sinking them. Watson has warrants in many countries. I say save the whales, but be rational about it.
Let’s just wait until the media turns on them. They have insulted their intelligence a few times and said on film they don’t like them and they are just using the media as their propaganda mouth piece.
I’m sure everyone knows just how nasty the media can be when they turn on someone. Ask any high profile government figure how bad it can be…

I love this show and the crew and I wish I could join them to help in the fight as 2 of the 6 whales that are being hunted are being hunted in major numbers and another kind of the blue whales is almost extinct because of the hunting.
I hope they can continue to help these whales, as my family and I love whales!
Also on the helicopter pilot’s helmet we notice that he has the cog symbol from Star Wars for the empire side.

Watson has got issues, the first mate Brown is a fucking moron. The crew is a bunch of fucking pot heads and all of them have too much time and money wasting their time in their little fantasy world. I wish they would return to their own countries and teach kids within their areas of real expertise, or do some other genuine service to mankind instead of this phony ass bullshit that must cost a serious bunch of bucks to flagellate away all summer.
I would love to supply the captain of the Sea Shepherd a boat that’s 60knots fast. Then the harpoon ships wouldn’t out run the Sea Shepherd. I wish there where a place in the internet to contact a bunch of people to get together on to do something like that.
