I think its rather foolish to say that we can't be critical of philanthropy efforts. Within grassroots movements for change there is always a debate about the best way to do things. If we never had that debate we'd get lost following all sorts of misguided, inefficient plans. We'd never be able to criticize the catastrophic failures of World Bank development projects, for example.

The people calling out Bono for his self-righteous and counter-productive philanthropy efforts are not just people in this forum, many grassroots leaders in the fight against AIDS have voiced similar criticisms. I'm ready to follow their lead, not Bono's.

Make Bono Step Down...

I like Jolie-Pitt's involvement in the environment but also a negative side is that the world is suffering with the over population of people. If they continue to have like 7 more kids of their own it is hypocritical.
Also, livestock is a big part of global warming (cutting down trees to have 'farms' as well as methane produced from all the waste) and they are still meat eaters supporting meat companies and factory farming?

If throwing stones and pointing out rather obvious ethical inconsistencies are the same thing, then label me a stoner.
MacDonald's is garbage, straight up. Jolie-Pitt should know better. Plain old everyday access to information here in the 21st century affords almost EVERYBODY on the planet the ability to Know better. Supersize me, anyone? Why shouldn't gorgeously famous celebrities be held accountable [in an ecorazzi forum, might I remind...]for knowing better, and even more so, for not doing better---better for their kids, and better for the planet.

All you apologist fans should be ashamed of yourselves.

Part of what makes the Jolie-Pitt brood so appealing is their lack of perfection. Couple that with their complete willingness to put it all out there and a lot of people get uncomfortable and start to throw stones.

But I'm sure you're completely above reproach, Pro. Betty.

...seriously

Bono's philanthropy efforts are more than just self-righteous...they're actually very dangerous

The RED Campaign's message is basically this: you can solve systemic problems without changing anything in your materialist lifestyle. Grassroots AIDS activists have called out Bono time and time again for various stances he's taken - from excluding charities from RED proceeds that treat sex workers because they don't have the "innocent victim" appearance, to simply proliferating images of an Africa that is monolithicly disempowered and helpless.

I think we shouldn't be glorifying Bono for throwing himself in the philanthropic spotlight. Rather...help the group of people that are calling on him to retire.

Check out the campaign where people are raising a pot of money that will go to the Global Fund to fight AIDS...only once Bono retires from public life & ceases to install himself as the front man of movements that never asked him to lead them.

I find the glorification of the Jolie-Pitts as humanitarians a little bit absurd as well as hypocritical. One would think that Brad and Angelina's public ethics would translate more seamlessly with their public parenting decisions. For example, how on earth do they reconcile the fact that they have been photographed on numerous occasions exiting McDonald's restaurants as a family, presumably after supporting one of the largest scale environmental polluters (industrial factory farming) and animal and human rights violators on the planet. Not to mention that the so-called food is severely lacking in nutritional value. I'm not famous or anything, but even I know better than to feed my children crappy meals.

The "McDonaldization" of the planet and the mentality that gives it power is one of the major obstacles that current and future generations must struggle to over come. Cheap entertainment fare with huge externalized costs are being glorified by the Jolie-Pitts and their brood.

Am I the only one who thinks Brad and Ange's ecorazzi fans need to give them a serious reality check when it comes to proliferating the ideology of a "fast food nation?"

just some food for thought...

and while i'm ranting i may as well get it all out there... what the heck is up with letting little maddox have a WAR themed birthday party for his last b-day?
You would think an international humanitarian spokesperson would go to great lengths to teach the art of peace and diplomacy in her own home. I know boys will be boys, but eventually, boys will be men, and they will likely reflect the attitudes of their parents. If Brad and Angelina encourage the attitude that war is a game, of which domination, killing and weapons are all a part, then what is so gloriously ethical about that?

Sorry for the rant, but these little tidbits have been stuck in my craw for sometime now, and this seemed an appropriate forum to air them.
