So, in case you’ve been a sleep for the past 50 years or so…SMOKING CIGARETTES IS BAD FOR YOU!!

Patrick Swayze shocked critics this week when he was spotted smoking on breaks from his new television series, The Beast. Swayze was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in early April, and after doing remarkably well with treatment, it looks like he’s back on the pack. BAD NEWS!

Julianne Moore recently spoke to Parade magazine about quitting smoking 15 years ago and how it not only helped her health, but her career too. Julianne says: “The time when I began to see the most clearly was after I turned 30. I was 31 or 32, and I quit smoking. I was so emotional. I mean, everybody is emotional when they quit smoking. But I had been so unhappy, and I realised that I had just been – I don’t know – literally stuffing it back with those cigarettes in my mouth. I felt like I woke up suddenly.”

Now I’m generally not one of those pretentious non-smokers who make ugly faces when someone lights up, but these smoking celebs aren’t just hurting themselves, they’re hurting the environment too. Besides the fact that you release over 4000 chemicals into the air each time you light up, it’s estimated that there are over 2 billion cigarette butts disposed of each day and it takes an average of 25 years for each of them to decompose. So boooo on that!

Honestly, pancreatic cancer is regarded as 100% fatal. If cigarettes give Swayze some comfort during this time, so be it. It’s not the time for him to worrying about quitting.

I gotta disagree. I don’t know that any cancer is regarded as “100% fatal” I don’t think anything in this world is 100%. So I had sympathy for Swayze before but not anymore… And I certainly don’t think the logic should be “I’m sick with cancer anyway here let me smoke cancer sticks I’m gonna die anyway. Because if THAT is his attitude he IS going to DIE!

Well it’s too bad he’s smoking but that doesn’t necessarily mean he’s carting his butts off to the nearest wetland estuary. ;)

Yes, there is not such thing as “100% fatal.” The prognosis for pancreatic cancer is quite poor, but only Swayze and his doctors know for sure what will happen in the future. Odds are in favor of him passing away within five years, but that doesn’t mean it’s over.

Pancreatic cancer is notoriously difficult to survive. A diagnosis typically means you aren’t long for this world. Smoking not only reduces his chances for survival, but it degrades his quality of life. Idiot.

This is exactly the reason why I have a hard time sympathizing with smokers. They don’t give a s#it about themselves! So why should I?

  • Ann

The most common type of pancreatic cancer, adenocarcinoma, is basically 100% fatal (ok, 99% dead in five years). You would be better off with a diagnosis of HIV than this common form pancreatic cancer.

We don’t know Swayze’s exact diagnosis, but I would never judge a pancreatic cancer patient for smoking. If it is a comfort to him during this time, so be it.

Has anyone else ever noticed the way the grass dies in places where numerous cigarette butts are tossed(around smoking break areas)? It’s not because the grass gets burned; it’s from all of the chemicals in the cigarettes. This is a sad and scary (and obvious) message.

Also, as a side note, I was just told a great quote about sectioning off smoking: “Having a smoking section in a restaurant is like having a peeing section in a swimming pool!” hahahaha

Don’t these people know that smoking is bad for you and gives you diseases

I have a close friend with pancreatic cancer, he goes through painful procedures and trial drugs in hopes of having more time with his children (ages 8 and thirteen). It’s as bad of a diagnosis someone can get, HIV would be better in terms of treatment and survival (as noted above) but we have hope. I don’t know Patrick Swayzes type of pancreatic cancer (there are several kinds, all bad) but some are way slower than others (which kill relatively quick when finally found). I realize he doe not have to worry about getting cancer from smoking so to speak but it seems foolish to add the problems smoking causes to pancreatic cancer and the treatment of this disease when prolonging life and increasing the quality of that time is the main course of therepy…smoking seems redundant.
