Finally! We haven’t had a good celebrity litter bug story since Kate Bosworth ticked off Orlando Bloom in 2006 at a green music festival in Japan. Back then, the actress had just finished supporting an environmental rally up on stage when she reportedly threw some garbage and a cigarette butt onto the ground. Bloom blew up at her — but Bosworth told him that since nobody saw, it was all good.

Unfortunately for Katherine Heigl, when she recently threw her cigarette butt on the ground (no less than 10ft. from a garbage can at that!), a police officer biked over and told her to pick it up. From the Star,

“The officer told Katherine to pick up the butt and throw it away in the trash, 10 feet away,” the source says. “He added that he’d fine her next time he catches her tossing trash on the sidewalk.”

Nice! I’ve always wondered if anyone honestly ever enforces those litter laws. Good to see LAPD’s finest are up to the task. Now if Heigl would just drop that smoking habit in the first place, cigarette butts would no longer be an issue.

Seriously, it’s nasty.

Nice! Cigarette flickers are so tacky and inconsiderate.

The story about Kate was bogus. It was made up by an OB fan & some sites (like this one) unfortunately chose to run w/ it. This is the down side of the internet.

I’ve adored her for years, but if that’s true, it drops my opinion of her quite a bit :/

    Love this story!

I despise people who toss their cancer sticks on the ground. Even worse are the ones who toss them over their shoulders without a thought as to whether or not people might be behind them. But then their nasty habit is more important than our clean breathing air.

And hey, if it’s raining, don’t even think of smoking under the bus shelters. I shouldn’t have to pick between getting rained on and getting a face full of carcinogens.

Good for the cop for busting her snotty ass.

Whether or not this specific story is true, I hope it gets a bunch of blog coverage. Maybe it’ll remind the world that cigarette butts DO count as litter.

In Malaysia you get the death penalty for throwing chewing gum on the sidewalk! Not a bad idea really… Cops should have the right to shoot on site anyone caught throwing trash out the window of their car. This would do away with most monster truck red neck Republicans! Budweiser should be fined a million dollars for every one of their cans found on the side of the road! Come on guys! Cigarettes don’t harm anything… filters do. Animals eat them and choke! We should just ban cigarette filters, which are going to kill you before the tabacco will anyway… If you’re going to smoke, at least have the courage of your opinions and suck it in all the way, make the nicotine count! Stop wasting all that good residue.
