Palin’s Convention Speech Written By Passionate Vegetarian Matthew Scully

Filed under: animals, campaigns, politics — Michael Parrish DuDell @ 11:59 am

Oh Sarah Palin how you make me cringe! No seriously, does this woman not just scream PURE EVIL?! She’s like a buffet of really bad ideas. Start off with a little scoop of book banning, maybe grab a slice of aerial hunting, oh don’t forget to get a cup of fur-wearing obsession and top it all of with some homemade baked “Alaska Should Be It’s Own Country”. Whether you’re a democrat or republican, I think it’s safe to say that Sarah Palin gives the average American citizen about 3,000,000 reasons to shudder.

Most of the country first met Palin at the Republican National Convention just a few weeks ago when she gave a rather well received acceptance speech. But you know what they say: behind every great speech is a vegetarian. (Okay, maybe they don’t say that, but they should.)

In an ironic course of action, Palin’s speech was penned by none other than former Bush speechwriter Matthew Scully. Scully is well known for his vegetarian lifestyle and rather strict views on animal rights. Besides his dietary choice, Scully is also the author of Dominion: The Power of Man, the Suffering of Animals, and the Call to Mercy — an acclaimed book written on the subject of animal welfare. Obviously Matthew is quite critical of the hunting community and has even spoken out against some of the more brutal forms of the practice, including aerial hunting — an activity Palin considers “fun.”

To his credit, Scully started drafting the convention speech before knowing that Palin would be the nominee, but the whole thing still seems rather fishy to me. What do you think Ecorazzi readers? Is this vegetarian treason or merely part of the job? Chime in and tell us what you think!

  1. Having a staunch Republican animal advocate like Matthew Scully is unbelievably helpful to our cause. I have been able to introduce Republicans his articles (like Fear Factories) on cruelty to animals without their dismissing them as liberal screeds. If not for Matthew Scully, they would never have paid a bit of attention, believe me.

If he really didn’t know that Sarah Palin would be delivering the speech when he wrote it, then you can’t blame him too much. Besides, I thought she came off as a strident, smug bitch and I know her speech turned off a lot of swing voters anyway, so it wasn’t his masterpiece (luckily for us Democrats).

  2. Or maybe he just sold out to the highest bid!
Accused of high vegetarian treason! Off with his head!!! Kidding… :)

Anyway, I have been posting some comments on the 2 evil soul mates maccain and palin (a.k.a. maccalin). And because I can’t come up with one good thing about them, I have been kind of trashing them… like republicans do to those who don’t agree with them!
I have also been saying that the rest of the world (where I’m included - Portugal) has already ‘chosen’ Obama as the best person for the job!

For those who don’t believe me and who didn’t see the MTV awards, here is something to prove me right:

Please, pretty please, watch it! Don’t pay any attention to some of the nasty comments posted there…

As I have mentioned before, if the 2 evil soul mates win, America’s image around the world will suffer its biggest blow ever! Please don’t let that happen…

    Thank you ;)

  3. I think this is def a form of “veg treason”

And he was writing for Bush and he knew who he was. And it’s not like he will not write for that ass-clown again….if they pay him enough.

There was a whole blog post about it on a more “Animal Liberation” type blog that had very harsh words about all this, and it was excellent. It basically DID call him a traitor, a hack and a sell out.

It wasn’t just all mud slinging either, there was actual research and facts…but the above pretty much sums it up. And I tend to agree for the most part.

This ticket (to me) spells more kind of doom then just her love of killing animals. A LOT hangs on the line…..and i am really terrified.

  4. Uh, I believe you mean “shudder” not
“shutter”. And yes, I definitely shudder at the thought of these right wing nutjobs running the country for another 4 years!

Everyone who cares at all about animals, the environment, women’s rights, freedom of speech, ending war, ect…, please vote for Obama. Thank you.

  5. Mmm, guess his so-called religious principles outweighed his pro-veg principles when it came to Scary Palin. So, yeah, he’s a traitor.

  6. I thought your phrase, “A buffet of bad ideas.” was perfect. She’s one very, very scary person.

  7. Unforgivable! I am so saddened to see this smart passionate man wrote a speech for one of the most evil b%tches on the planet.

  8. He’s pathetic — especially if he votes the McCain-Palin ticket. At the same time, he seems so representative of much of the right: hold to your principles unless gain can be had by tossing them aside, and/or forgive ONLY those in your fold even if they violate your most sacrosanct values.

Scully tossing his veg principles aside to write a speech for Palin is not that different from the Republican base forgiving Palin’s unwed daughter for being pregnant (they would condemn, and have condemned, other unwed mothers and their parents).

One expects such hypocrisy from Republicans and, in my view, it’s never ok.

  9. Disappointed. Sell out. Ick.

  10. On the one hand I’m surprised and disappointed. On the other, the man has written speeches for people he probably didn’t agree with before.

I suppose my biggest problem with his writing Palin’s speeches is that he’s likely to completely omit the topics of her platform that upset his own values. Topics that would upset others values and possibly scare the crap out of some of the people who are turning to her as I type, rather than attempt to put spin on them as someone without any objection to killing wolves and bears from planes would.

  11. I’ve read there are about a thousand caribou antlers stacked up beside Palin’s house in Alaska. Her bloodlust and anti-nature behavior disturb me more than anything else I know about her.

Does Matthew Skully have anything to say about writing the speech? Did he consider not doing it? Why did he do it? Does he think he’s working against his own interests, or is there a rationale?

Adriana is right that there are benefits of having people like Skully supporting animals’ rights. Most gays don’t understand the Log Cabin Republicans, but they were invited this year for the first time to the RNC - an overall positive move for equal rights.

On the other hand, Palin’s speech was hate-filled, nasty. Is that what Skully does best?

  12. Please people - take this woman and the threat she poses to us seriously. She will cause so much havoc i she is given the vice presidency as a platform. VOTE - and get your friends to vote - and not for Sara Barracuda. We only have one shot to get these people out of the oval office. Don’t blow it by thinking she is a clown and being complacent. We can’t take 4 more years of bad science and creationist BS.

  13. I wonder how he could do it…are you sure that he wrote it? Your article didn’t say. How did he possibly square it with his ideals.
I find Sarah Palin a lot less scary than the media forces that have a) done so little to truly explain and investigate her positions…it’s left to the net to do the dirty work and b) have allowed her to not talk to them. can anyone imagine what the stink would be if Obama (or any democrat, come to think of it) REFUSED to speak to the media?

  14. I agree — she’s scary — a perfect replica of my ex-sister in law who was always preaching and self-righteously trying to manipulate everyone with a sugary sweet voice and manner. Believe me, underneath it all is a barracuda who will use force and the power of her office to bring everyone into the flock…whether we want it or not. Very dangerous!

And about Scully. Just another neo-con hypocrite!

  18. Take a good look at this link. I don’t know if the amount of insanity enveloping this country has been properly studied or reported on. http://www.vegsource.com/talk/top/ LOOK AT IT. 20. I was shocked to learn that Scully had written that mean-spirited, hateful speech for Palin, who is of course, a mean-spirited, hateful, animal hating person. As far as I’m concerned, Scully has sold his soul to the devil. I used to have a great deal of respect for him after reading DOMINION but no more! He doesn’t deserve anyone’s respect anymore.
