Brad Pitt Shells Out Cash To Fight Initiative Banning Gay Marriage

September 18th 2008

While the economy continues to spin faster down the drain, there are some peopel out there still focused on what they believe to be the single greatest threat to America: Gay Marriage. [Insert Dramatic Music Here]

It’s a sad slice of this country that would like nothing more than to deny marriage rights to same sex partners. Even more disturbing is how passionate and zealous they are to continue somehow making it a regular political focus. Unfortunately, such ignorance must be challenged — and even more money spent to battle backwards thinking until it no longer is reflected in law. Enter Proposition 8 and California.

Earlier this year, CA’s Supreme Court declared a ban on gay couples swapping vows as unconstitutional — clearing the way for couples like Ellen DeGeneres and Portia Rossi to get married. There is no happy ending yet, however, as anti-gay marriage groups have rallied to get Proposition 8 on the November ballot that would overturn the ruling and forever define marriage as between a man and a woman.

Brad Pitt — who is a strong supporter of gay rights — just announced that he’s donating $100,000 to groups fighting the initiative. So far, Pitt’s contribution is the highest made by a major celebrity; something organizers hope he inspires others to follow. While the anti-Prop 8 group as raised $11.1 million, supporters have cleared $16 million. Like I said earlier, imagine what good that money could do for something else? Say, the people of Galveston, Texas?

“Because no one has the right to deny another their life, even though they disagree with it, because everyone has the right to live the life they so desire if it doesn’t harm another and because discrimination has no place in America, my vote will be for equality and against Proposition 8,” said Pitt in a statement.

True words — not only for today — but for everything this country was created for in the first place. If we’re such an advanced, modern society — why is equality still something we spend millions on debating?

  1. Well if maccain/palin win you can say bye bye to this and so many other rights!

American freedom will be dictated by a man who has no will of its own and by a religious fanatic ‘woman’ who will impose her laws on you. You just wait and see!

Look at what’s happening: the economic crisis, then the environmental catastrophes (Ike was just a sample) will come next and last but by no means least your civil rights and freedom will be lost!

  2. It’s really good of Brad to step forward on this issue. Of course he’s leading with his money, again, but he’s doing it at home and with the twins probably honestly has about as much free time to shake hands and hand out fliers as Santa on x-mas eve.
