Justin Timberlake Set To Open Eco-Friendly Golf Course In Tenn.

September 30th 2008

Justin Timberlake is putting the finishing touches on the first LEED-certified golf course in the United States. The 27-year-old singer is an avid golfer and his latest business venture, called Miramichi Lakes, takes his love of the sport to a new level.

Timberlake revealed in an interview how he saved the struggling golf course last year from development and decided to open up his own, eco-friendly version. “Originally it was called Woodstock Hills, and it was the first place my dad taught me to hit a ball,” he said. “And last year we found out they were going to auction it off and turn it into a development. So we thought it was such a landmark for the community, we’d scoop it and save it. And we did. We were able to before it was auctioned off.”

“After we had the golf course we said why don’t we refurbish it and make it even nicer for the community. Then I asked questions about what we could possibly do, and we found out we could actually make it a “green course.” So when it’s finished this summer it will be a Platinum LEED certified green course. The first in the United States of America, so that’s pretty exciting that you could take all that land and make it eco-friendly.”

According to an article in the Memphis Daily News, all of the buildings on the 303-acre course will be built to the highest LEED-certified green building standards available — a considerable investment. In addition the location will sport “a renewable energy field and a walking trail with educational placards and seating for the public to learn about responsible energy and natural resource usage.”

Wow. Clint Eastwood could learn a bunch from this. Nice work, Justin. Look for Miramichi Lakes to open this October.

Edit: Timberlake’s Golf Course is opening July 25, 2009.

  1. I just want to pick up that Timberlake and spin/hug him all day long…what a super swell guy.

  2. I think we all suport the leadership, advocacy as well as real action of these celebrities [rather than lip service], when they undertake these kind of activities, but I think Justin has a better support network than most in this consortium, in order to achieve something substantial here.

Whilst I’m not 100% certain they are related, there is an award winning architectural practice by the name of Kieran Timberlake and Associates who are recognised leaders in the development of lightweight architectural ESD stuctures.

Those interested in same might light to confirm whether there is a family link here, or for general interest check out the Loblolly house, and recent MOMA exhibitions on the Inhabitat blog by the firm. It’s quite striking timber based design, and certainly has eco chic appeal.

  3. What a GREAT thing he has done for those of us who live on the original Big Creek Golf Course.

    Thanks Justin and family

    Much love,
    Rhonda Roberts

  4. We are so excited for you and your family! And we admire and appreciate your commitment to the environment– NOT JUST LIP SERVICE!!!

    Love,
    Mariella and Everet

  5. Time for an update for this article. This Golf Course is slated for opening on July 25, 2009 and has been renamed Miramichi Lakes the last I heard.

The web master here needs to have someone get in touch with the Course operators and write a newer article to get the word out.

  6. It’s nice to see that JT is using his celebrity to promote the environmental aspect of golf. Courses are inherently natural resources, but too often are polluted with pesticides and fertilizers to keep them in pristine playing condition. Glad that the course is LEED platinum, and I hope he continues the trend by making sure that water conservation and sustainable course management are top priorities.
