While Sarah Palin chooses to spend her free time shooting animals from helicopters and trying to manipulate the endangered species list, Senator Barack Obama is out and about rescuing animals from shelters.

Earlier this year, rumors began circulating that the Obamas were planning to add a doggy addition to their family. Ingrid Newkirk, president of PETA, quickly penned a letter to Barack saying: “Senator, no one needs to tell you that this country is proud to be a melting pot and that there is something deeply wrong and elitist about wanting only a purebred dog. Millions of Great American Mutts—the dog that should be our national dog—are set to die in our nation’s extremely overcrowded pounds and shelters for lack of good homes. When you are ready, please adopt a homeless pound puppy—a grateful refugee from a society that has not always treated the true “underdog” kindly—rather than cater to special interests who do not have dogs’ interests at heart.”

Well it looks like the Obama family listened to PETA!! Michelle Obama announced yesterday on Entertainment Tonight that her family was indeed planning to “adopt a rescue dog,” and we couldn’t be happier about it! It’s no surprise that Obama is making the responsible decision here, especially after he had a vegan moment earlier this summer.

If you’re thinking about becoming a pet owner, please visit your local shelter or and adopt a lovely homeless animal in your neighborhood!

While I don’t agree with PETA (feel free to e-mail me and I will tell you why), I do love that they adopted a rescue dog! This is not enough for me to vote for Obama but I’m not voting for McCain either, don’t worry.

I have a Great Pyrenees/Lab that just showed up at my parents house with a puppy that my parents kept and I took her. She is the sweetest most loving dog. She wasn’t free because huge health issues we had to fix but she was worth every cent. No idea why someone would dump a dog like that. Her puppy is an awesome dog as well!

Sometimes PETA gets it right, and I’m glad the senator and his family have agreed to do the right thing and adopt a dog. I hope s/he brings them many years of happiness.

Most of the time PETA doesn’t get a thumbs up from me, but in this case they deserve two.

I’ve had several rescued pets over the years, and my current cat came from the local shelter as a kitten. She’s been my greatest joy and blessing and I couldn’t imagine having left her behind to face the fate she might have had, if she hadn’t found a home with me.

It’s good to think a dog or puppy will find a safe haven in the Obama household from one of their local shelters as well. That’s one more deserving life saved with just the tiniest of efforts and an open mind.

Hopefully this will inspire others to rescue dogs from shelters instead of buy them from pet stores or breeders.

Even though PETA makes us animal lovers be ashamed, I applaud them for urging the Obamas to adopt a rescue dog.

Why all the negativity about PETA?? You may not always agree with their methods but they have done some incredible things for animals and the animal rights movement. They have the courage to say what a lot of animal lovers just don’t have the courage to. As for President Obama. Just one more reason to feel good about my vote!!! I had no doubt, PETA or no PETA, he and his wonderful family would do the right thing.

It’s wonderful that the Obamas are standing by their pledge to rescue a dog from a shelter rather than buy one. It bodes well for a President who will work at solving problems rather than contributing to them!

and she does many other wonderful, fun tricks that she will do at the direction of the Barac family… She’s 5 lbs, and she’s beautiful!

    * Is a “CERTIFIED THERAPY DOG” bringing smiles to people in nursing homes, Veteran’s Center, schools. shut-ins…
    * Winner of National Dog Talent Contest… Dogcatemy Awards!
    * Has performed around the US and in Sweden, this past summer, at seminars and social events surrounding the “World Dog Show” in Stockholm!
    * Her tricks are totally unique, and lots of FUN!!!

PETA should not get the credit. It was thousands of rescue organizations and people thorughout the country who wrote in to the Obama’s about adopting rather than buying a dog. I happen to know a few organizations in Los Angeles, PETA not among them, that sent their letters in along with signed petitions. Give credit where it is due.

Ok, so while I don’t personally think it’s a big deal for Palin to watch a turkey house or go hunting…….(although its one thing to hunt and not eat, quite another to just hunt and catch your meet instead of going to a grocery store),…..I am incredibly happy that the obama’s are adopting a shelter dog! There are really so few…if any reasons to buy dogs and so many great great reasons to adopt! I really hope they actually do it! If they put enough feelers out there, I am sure they can get their labradoodle, or whatever other semi – non allergic type of dog they could want.

Yes but can an orphan pass a back-ground check? I have rescued 3 dogs who where dumped in the desert which is worse than the pound. Some die as did the mother and 2 female pups others turn feral and get shot by the ranchers. Others like my three are saved, loved and live long lives. Thank you Mr. President. I wish you could save more than one with your statue.

  • Derrick

Mr President you broke your promise. Assuring millions of dogs in shelters a death sentence.

    Still happy??
