Yes but can an orphan pass a back-ground check? I have rescued 3 dogs who where dumped in the desert which is worse than the pound. Some die as did the mother and 2 female pups others turn feral and get shot by the ranchers. Others like my three are saved, loved and live long lives. Thank you Mr. President. I wish you could save more than one with your statue.

Ok, so while I don't personally think it's a big deal for Palin to watch a turkey house or go hunting.......(although its one thing to hunt and not eat, quite another to just hunt and catch your meet instead of going to a grocery store),.....I am incredibly happy that the obama's are adopting a shelter dog! There are really so few...if any reasons to buy dogs and so many great great reasons to adopt! I really hope they actually do it! If they put enough feelers out there, I am sure they can get their labradoodle, or whatever other semi - non allergic type of dog they could want.

PETA should not get the credit. It was thousands of rescue organizations and people thorughout the country who wrote in to the Obama's about adopting rather than buying a dog. I happen to know a few organizations in Los Angeles, PETA not among them, that sent their letters in along with signed petitions. Give credit where it is due.

It's wonderful that the Obamas are standing by their pledge to rescue a dog from a shelter rather than buy one. It bodes well for a President who will work at solving problems rather than contributing to them!

Why all the negativity about PETA?? You may not always agree with their methods but they have done some incredible things for animals and the animal rights movement. They have the courage to say what a lot of animal lovers just don't have the courage to. As for President Obama. Just one more reason to feel good about my vote!!! I had no doubt, PETA or no PETA, he and his wonderful family would do the right thing.

[...] As reported earlier, the Obama family is planning on adopting a “first dog” from a shelter and foregoing the traditional AKC route. Of course, this was back in early October when Michelle Obama first announced that they would be rescuing a pooch — but hopefully such plans are still on the table. The one issue surrounding the adoption is that any pet must be hypoallergenic because of Malia’s allergies. [...]
