While the Von Trapps might like Raindrops on roses and whiskers on kittens, we here at Ecorazzi have a few of our own favorite things – namely animal-rights groups and the celebrities who support them.
So obviously we went apples and bananas after getting word that Nigel Barker was at a rally at the Canadian Embassy yesterday with The HSUS’s ProtectSeals team and more than 100 D.C.-area animal advocates.
Barker, who many know from America’s Next Top Model, has been an outspoken animal advocate for years and has helped expose the brutal seal-hunting trade still taking place in Canada.
Between chants about Canada’s annual slaughter of baby harp seals for the fur trade, Nigel spoke about his experience this spring, when he traveled to Canada’s ice floes. At the rally he described the harp seal nursery as a once in a lifetime experience that “should be cherished,” and he said the seal hunt was the “most horrifying thing I’ve ever seen.”
To read more about Nigel’s visits to Canada, what he witnessed there, and his lifelong concern for animals, check out his guest piece on Wayne Pacelle’s blog – an Ecorazzi Veg Blog Round-Up favorite.
Keep rocking the good stuff, you guys!

We can only hope he’s vegetarian as well!
Wow Nigel is bad-mouthing Canadians in the US. That must really take a lot of guts.
10,000,000,000 animals are killed in the US each year to satisfy American’s appetites. So I guess the Canadians are guilty of utilizing a different species?
Can anyone say “hypocrisy”?
Wanda, just because one species is abused and exploited, that doesn’t make it acceptable for another to be abused and exploited. The Canadian commercial seal hunt is inherently cruel, economically unnecessary and ecologically unsound – those are the facts. Calling someone a “hypocrite” does not in any way alter those facts.
I applaud Nigel Barker for his work on behalf of the hundreds of thousands of grey, harp and hooded seal pups slaughtered in Canada each year, and stand proudly with him and all others who are working to end this annual atrocity in Canada.
