Natalie Portman is pictured here sporting cruelty-free shoes from her own line –  Te Casan Vegan Shoes – at the 2008 Glamour Women of the Year Awards held at Carnegie Hall in New York City. As always, we’re pleased as much to see Natalie supporting vegan, sustainable fashion.

    I just visited the Te Casan web site and I am not quite sure what makes the shoes Vegan. Here is a description of one pair of boots.

    # Black vegetable-dyed leather calf boot with ankle and calf buckled strap details
    # Leather sole

    Isn’t the leather from an animal? I’m just a little confused because I didn’t see anything on the web site that says the shoes are vegan. Maybe I missed it, can you help me out.

    Chaotic- It looks like there are a few designers under the TeCasan line. Perhaps not all of them are vegan, but Natalie’s definitely are. Here’s the link to her collection. I will correct it in the above post. Thanks for the heads up!

    I think that environmentally friendly and vegan shoes are really going to catch on in the next 1-2 years. I’m surprised that most of the big shoe companies aren’t really doing anything yet to jump on the bandwagon.

    I just checked out the corrected link, thanks. Her “Perla” shoes are really cute. I just wish they weren’t $171.50. I couldn’t explain that purchase to my husband, I don’t wear heels often.

    Natalie Portman’s collection is definitely vegan, but it’s a stretch to call them sustainable. Vegan shoes are comprised of man-made materials, like PVC, and those are anything but eco-friendly. I’m happy the animals are left out of it, but it would be nice if her line could start using recycled vegan materials instead! Why not raise the bar even higher?

    Erin, good point, but the chemicals that preserve leather and suede are also quite toxic and cause problems for tanners and people who live downstream from tanneries. Neither leather nor pleather is perfect, but I’ll go for the vegan option, as it omits the animal cruelty element.

    I’ve been thinking about that for some years now. Back in my teens I’d buy these recycled hemp shoes with recycled rubber soles. I don’t know why they don’t have them anymore… Maybe someone knows where to find them?
