Elton John Believes Prop 8 Is A Good Thing

So suck it up and embrace inequality!

November 13th 2008

Elton John, who celebrated a civil union ceremony with longtime partner David Furnish in 2005, believes the gay community should stop fighting the right to “marry” because it “puts people off.” At a NYC fundraiser for the Elton John AIDS Foundation Monday night, the legendary singer said,

We’re not married. Let’s get that right. We have a civil partnership. I don’t want to be married. I’m very happy with a civil partnership. If gay people want to get married, or get together, they should have a civil partnership. The word marriage, I think, puts a lot of people off. You get the same equal rights that we do when we have a civil partnership. Heterosexual people get married. We can have civil partnerships.”

Way to settle there, Elton. David over on Equality Loudoun said it best last month when arguing against the idea of civil unions as “separate, but equal” saying: “Isn’t the codification of a separate, parallel institution for some couples in itself a powerful signal to think of those couples and that institution as something unequal? And that inequality in turn reinscribes the idea that gay people themselves are unequal.”

Perfectly stated. In my opinion, Elton John needs to better appreciate the big picture.

  1. Plus he’s missing the fact that a Civil Partnership – while equal in terms of benefits in the state of California – is NOT equal in terms of benefits in the United States of America. Federal benefits are denied by the boatload because of that word “marriage.”

I’m religious, heterosexual and married… I think that if the government can’t provide equal benefits for all, it shouldn’t provide them for anyone. We either all get “marriage” rights or we all get “civil partnership” rights. No need to differentiate.

  2. way to condone the last acceptable form of discrimination, there, Elton. You want a separate water fountain, too?

  3. um, no… often times it’s really just classifying something for what it is, not an issue of inequality. Just because something contains a different linguistic definition does not mean that it constitutes an inequality. Parties must first define the measure for what equality looks like before saying that our differences make us unequal.

By this same logic we should stop referring to other classifications as well and homogenize our entire referential system. Straight up ridiculous.

  4. I’ve always thought that Elton John lacked taste. I suppose his political views are much to be desired as well.

I would rather say that I “married my husband” rather than “civilly partnered with my partner.”

  5. How can someone say that? That’d be just like a black person saying that people shouldn’t be fighting for the right to marry a white person (back when that was illegal of course), I don’t get why people think that being homophobic is any different than being racist. I mean of course Elton isn’t being homophobic, but it seems kind of nuts that he wouldn’t want equal civil rights, even if he doesn’t want to get married.

  6. Elton John is your god. Now you refuse to obey him?

  7. Hmm, maybe if he can’t get married his partner can’t take half of his wealth in the divorce?;P

  8. For once, fbr, I don’t totally disagree with you.

You may not want all the rights inherent in marriage, Elton, but clearly many same-sex couples do.

  9. This only shows that during a Civil Rights there are plenty of those oppressed who even speak out supportive of their oppressors and their oppression. They justify everything under the sun and quite frankly Elton John is a part of an older dying gay generation who also spent their days snorting more coke up their now plastic noses.

Elton needs to be careful, Disney disagrees with him and his opinions. I would hate to see a giant boycott of the Lion King and Elton’s work.

Apparently the “bitch is back,” and he needs to go back to England.
