PETA To Send Hayden Some Undercover Footage On Leather

Yesterday’s story on Hayden Panettiere joining up with bag designer Dooney & Bourke on a new line of Italian calfskin clutches brought out quite a few comments from the community. Actually, the conversation from both sides — those that are vegetarians, but still wear leather — to those that shop secondhand or have sworn it off completely, was enlightening.

As expected, PETA is looking at this as more of an opportunity to educate Hayden than one to slam her. Our friends over at The Celebrity Truth contacted the animal rights organization and received a response from media rep Heather Carlson.

“When celebrities get involved with animal rights in any way, we’re happy to work with them,” said Carlson. “Even if it’s on just one issue. Hayden has been wonderful on issues involving the slaughter of dolphins and whales. We are sure that she’ll extend her concern for abused animals to those less popular, like cows who are skinned for bags and shoes, once she sees our undercover footage, which we’ll be sending to her.”

That video, narrated by Pamela Anderson, is available below the fold. Should be interesting to see where Panettiere goes from here with such future partnerships.

    I like to think the best of people, especially Hayden who has done so much for whales and dolphins. She has already become a vegetarian so the next step is eliminating things that are made from animals (and tested on animals! She also sponsors Neutrogena products) from her life. I hope when she becomes more educated about these products and companies she’ll drop them immediately.

    Yeahhhh …. Not so much.

    The human pep rally designed the bags herself, including choosing the “fabrics.” She decided on the calfskin and the leather piping. Sounds like a big ol’ thumb in PETA’s eye to me.

    Thank you for this post! I’ve been wondering about this for months every time I turn the page to another d&b hayden magazine ad… I thought perhaps she didn’t have much to do with the design of these, but, well, looks like she does!

    Maybe once she gets what’s up she’ll become a great jump ship spokesgirl to head over to matt & nat! she’d love their japanese paper purses in magenta… so pretty! so luxe! definitely leo.

It really pisses me off when celebs like Gweneth Paltrow,Carrie Underwood and Hayden claim to be advocates for animal rights and then I turn the page in a magazine to see them toting their designer leather bags and wearing lether shoes. And for Hayden to be a spokesperson for D&B. Give me a friggin break!
