Paltrow’s Photo Shoot For Tod’s Continues To Raise Questions

A few weeks back, PETA had the opportunity to ask Gwyneth Paltrow about her Tod’s ad campaign that debuted in August — and the uproar that ensued over her apparent promotion of a fur stole. “During one set-up, a stylist came up from behind and draped a stole around my shoulders,” she said. “I didn’t pay much attention to it, and when I noticed it was fur I assumed it was fake fur but did not ask, so it’s my fault. I was very surprised when they ended up using that one shot out of hundreds for the centerpiece of the Tod’s ads. I know it’s not a great excuse, but I hope you and your members understand.”

Thanks to the fine folks over at Deceiver, it appears that PETA might have also wanted to bring up Paltrow’s promotion of Tod’s “precious” snakeskin shoes and alligator skin purses. Or was the actress too dazed by the flashbulbs to notice someone slip them on her feet and hand her the bag?

What this all really boils down to is Paltrow bothering to attempt to make PETA members feel at ease at all. If she really doesn’t care — stop pretending just to make everyone feel all happy inside. Trying to cover for the fur only, because nobody really noticed the other skins, is weak. Just chalk the whole thing up to a wash and admit you made a mistake or don’t bother. The last thing we need is an animal rights supporter whose convictions carry a price tag.

    AMEN TO THAT. I agree 100% and think “supporters” like this just muddy the waters and blur the lines.

    Supporters like her are reason people think fish is vegetarian.

    It’s all in how she frames it. She comes off as a poser, a fake, a hypocrite. She should step back and say something like, “I haven’t made all the personal changes in my life that I’d like to just yet, but I support animal rights and plan to go totally vegan in the future.” Or she should just get real and say, “I want the money and fame.”

    But the real shame is how anti-animal people are spinning this. Deceiver wrote: “Maybe Gwyneth’s only mistake was apologizing for anything at all. As we’ve found, there’s no way in hell she’s ever goign [sic] to apologize for enough things to ever make the animal rights movement happy. Maybe PETA should shut its collective pie hole.”
    As if it’s PETA’s fault Paltrow promotes animal abuse.

    Deceiver is great for getting things out there but they’re ethical stance on meat eating fur wearing pretty much sucks (in other words they don’t give a shit)

    I just went and read what Elaine was quoting and I agree with her – it’s NOT PETA’s fault. If Gyn changed her ways, stopped wearing dead animals of all kinds (she’s an equal opportunist skin/fur wearer -sick) and if she were to actually BE a vegetarian like she says she “pretty much is” then I bet PETA would forgive her in a fox’s heartbeat.

    Problem is she’s such a frickin hypocrite and after reading her pretentious GOOP mass emails I’d have to say that a fox or alligator has a lot more heart than she does. Gwynth is one hypocritical cold hearted BITCH.

    Yeah, let’s blame PETA for calling Gwyneth out on the carpet for talking animal rights but wearing fur (yeah, right, she didn’t know someone draped it on her or that it was real fur), leather, and other animal skins. Oh, and having to have a turkey carcass on the holidays.

    Elaine: I don’t believe for a second she’s working towards anything but more money and fame. Unless we find out she donated the fee from these shoots to an anti-fur organization.

    I would hate to see anyone alienate non-vegans from the animal rights movement. If so, not much will ever get done.

    People, especially high-profile folks — e.g., celebrities, can do a lot of good by lending their names to animal rights. If all they do is support pet rescue, that is something. Human nature (selfishness) interferes with the degree of animal welfare commitment.

    However, I do abhore hypocrisy. Previous poster was right to say that people should simply admit that they are “a work in progress”. (If I had a dime for every person who claimed to be a vegetarian but mentioned that they eat fish.)

    As for Gwyneth Paltrow, I heard her recently on a talk show state that she ate no 4-legged animals. I wasn’t under the impression that she claims to be a veg*n at all. (I have heard it rumored that her hubby is a veg*n.)

    Do your best, and try each day to do better.

    Um, Tyme, all you have to do is click on the very first few words in the article above that you commented on (that are linked) and it takes you to an piece a few weeks ago where Ms. Paltrow said her family is “pretty much vegetarian” And while her hubby Chris won sexiest vegetarian of the year there have been recent that surfaced of him eating flesh.. So they’re both a couple of hypocrite losers in my humble opinion. Here’s the link to ECO’s own piece where Gwyn talks of her veg*ness just weeks ago.

    And don’t forget Jack Lalanne. He hasn’t eaten meat since he was a kid. He’s what? 95 years old? and STILL fit as ever (my hero if I ever had one)

    He has done amazing physical feats even in his 60′s 70′s and 80′s, as he approaches 100 years old he doesn’t appear to be slowin’ down!

    She just needs to come clean and we might respect her again.

    I think its clear she is doing the TOD thing for the money. But what i don’t understand is why go that route.

    She is famous and wealthy already. Why not promote something else, something more aligned with who she claims to be.

    I’m sure that another designer would have her pretty face. TOD cant be only one courting her.
