The 2008 Razzie Award nominations have been released, and as expected, two of last year’s environmentally-themed films have made the cut. Not surprisingly, The Day The Earth Stood Still and The Happening are the unfortunate ones. Joining them in the Worst Picture category are such winners as Speed Racer, The Love Guru, Rambo, and Witless Protection.

M. Night Shymalan’s The Happening probably has the most notoreity as being one of last summer’s films I was told to avoid. Choosing to not see a film like The Love Guru was just instinct — especially after seeing just how God-awful the trailer was. The Day The Earth Stood Still is a long shot to win — since I’ve heard reports that it’s also a good mindless action film.

Of course, from these films also comes Razzie nominations for worst actors and actresses. Keanu Reeves, Mark Wahlberg, Jennifer Connelly, and Zooey Deschanel are all in the running. Adding insult to injury, Reeves has also been nominated for “Worst Career Achievement”. Ouch.

  1. I saw The Happening and it really wasn’t that bad. It was okay. I disagree with Zooey Deschanel’s nomination for a Razzie, she did a fine job for this kind of movie.

About Keanu Reeves: I totally agree, he needs the Lifetime Achievement Razzie. Actually him and Nicholas Cage should share that one.

  2. It’s sad that the most important issue of our time can’t seem to find the talent to express itself. I suspect it’s because the more hard edge issues are relegated to the margin, so what gets mainstreamed is declawed, defanged, and castrated!

I’m sure if you gave the topic to a few eco-radicals in Eugene, OR you’d end up with some kick ass movies! It’s just that the Hollywood studios are too afraid to let it rip.

Look at Planet Green, it’s so innocuous, it’s nauseating. On the other hand, check out G4. They just did a two hour Attack of Show special on legalizing marijuana! With no apology for it.

Why can’t Planet Green grow a set and grab the bull by the horns? Havn’t we seen enough green home make-overs for a life time?
