Sundance Festival To Feature More Environmental Films Than Ever Before

So fire up that private jet and let's go save the planet!

January 14th 2009

sundance_2009Tomorrow evening (Thursday for those keeping score), Robert Redford’s Indie Film paradisio known as the Sundance Festival will kick off in Park City, Utah. The event is quickly becoming the premiere launching pad for the environmental documentary scene — with films like Gore’s An Inconvenient Truth and Paine’s Who Killed The Electric Car having first bowed there. This year, even more green-themed flicks are ready to shine.

“We turned down about 50 environmental docs this year, and some really good ones. We didn’t get anywhere near that many in the previous two years combined,” said David Courier, a programmer for the festival’s U.S. and world documentary competition. “We’ve had a history of showing terrific environmental docs, but this is the year for it, for sure…It’s absolutely a reflection of what’s on people’s minds.”

Roughly five green films are competiting for the main Sundance prize — with seven out-of-competition eco documentaries squaring off separately. Of particular interest to some will be the film No Impact Man — which folows Colin Beavan and his family as they leave their high-consumption Manhattan lifestyles behind and try to go a year with zero impact on the environment. I remember reading about this guy all over the place a few years ago. Glad to see his story was put down in film.

As the festival rolls on, we’ll be highlighting the other green films getting their time in the spotlight. And if you’re in Park City, drop us a line and let us know how the skiing is.
