The Green Quote: Vegan Musician Michael Franti Gets Greener Each Year

January 27th 2009

michael-franti“Our band has gone over a greening process over the past 5 or 6 years. We converted our bus to a biodiesel bus, we don’t have any plastic bottles in our dressing room or onstage, and we require that the venues we play have recycling and composting. We put on a big festival in San Francisco every year called the Power to the Peaceful festival. We green it more each year.”

- Vegan singer Michael Franti discussing how he gets his green on. Franti opened for Al Gore’s Green Ball last week. To find out what else Franti does to stay environmentally-hip, read the rest of the piece at USNews.com!

thanks to erin for the trip!

  1. How in the hell is biodiesel a green fuel? It smells like shit, takes an insane amount of actual oil to make because the process isn’t efficient, and to make a serious amount of it would require destroying most of the planets rainforests to create farmland.

Glass bottles use more carbon based energy to produce than plastic bottles. For fuck sake, glass is shaped in god damn fire. Or do these guys forgo drinking? Ceramics also take a high energy process to make so that isn’t an option either. Plastic is the most energy efficient and requires less carbon emissions to make. This guy might as well go punch mother nature herself in the face.

Recycling is a high energy process that uses a lot of carbon based electrical sources. So there is another failure!

Composting involves the release of carbon through the decomposition process.

There is one thing for sure, this bands carbon footprint is bloody huge.

  2. Jesus, Tate, how do you live with yourself? You know you release carbon when you breathe? And CO2 is released in all it’s glory when we make solar cells for solar panels? Yes, recycling is inefficient, unless it’s glass or aluminum… but really, you’re concerned about compost?! Hah!

Watch your health – if you get all wound up about these trivial details, you’ll end up in the hospital… and we know the carbon footprint of hospitals!

In Franti’s defense, the man isn’t talking about pure green, but shades of green, which is still leagues above the rest. I think only hippies that live in communes out West are completely green… Even then, probably not…

  3. Oh, strike that, I just figured out you don’t actually care, and it’s just these damned sensationalists that you’re against…

    Fair enough.

  4. Dear John Tate (and all your other alter egos on this board)

First of all, I have attended two lectures recently one by the scientist who won the Nobel Prize with Al Gore, the other a well known environmental figure who spoke here in Florida. Both explained how glass will eventually break down back into sand if put in the ground. Plastic, a PETROLEUM product will not. Your comments probably take the cake (and not a vegan one at that) as being the most misinformed BS I have read on this board. (or anywhere for that matter – at least environmentally speaking) I bet you think Bush was a good president too and watch fox news. right?

  5. ps – the only thing you mentioned which might make some sense is the veggie oil thing, but I heard God Franti was using recycled oil so no problem there. Sorry you don’t like the smell.
At least (again) it’s not DIESEL petroleum made! and it’s grease that was already used at a restaurant!

I opted not to get a car run on biodiesel (and am not down with Ethanol) I think we should go solar. Hell there are 100% solar cars out there RIGHT Now!
