I have no idea who Neko Case is, but I like her thinking when it comes to animals — even if she can’t stand PETA’s methods. In a recent interview with Spinner, Case says zoos are a sad way to teach kids about animals — and believes animals get the raw end of the deal when it comes to disputes with humans. From the article,

“Those stories are so depressing,” she told Spinner. “And the animal is always the one who gets murdered at the end. I don’t know why people act so shocked. You got in the cage with the tiger, you were harassing it and then it f—ing killed you. It’s a f—ing tiger. What the f— were you thinking?”

“Then they shoot the tiger. That’s hardly fair. It’s a large predator. Or killer whales in zoos — those things are supposed to swim 200 miles a day. It’s like having a teenager and saying, ‘OK, I’m gonna feed and clothe you, but you have to live in this refrigerator.’ People say [zoos] are for the children, but why would you want your children to see sad, crazy animals?”

Case was also happy to see an animal organization other than PETA step in to rescue Michael Vick’s dogs. “Best Friends took the Michael Vick dogs,” Case points out. “That’s a big deal because a lot of supposed animal welfare organizations like PETA — who can blow me — said you should euthanize the dogs immediately. But it’s not the dogs’ fault that they were fighting dogs — they’ve been abused. Pit bulls are muscular and big, but they’re not man-eaters.”

But here’s what I really like — Case has worked out a scheme with her record label so that anytime someone posts a link to her song, People Gotta Alot Of Nerve, they will donate $5 to the Best Friends Animal Society. This will happen until February 3rd! Nice!

Neko Case is only one of the most overlooked singer songwriters of this era! She’s fab…

As for PETA – yes, sadly they did not give the dogs a chance and wanted to put them down.

I am a contributor to Best Friends and can’t remember if ER has written about them before… But it’s a shame if they have not.

While Best Friends might not pull some of the stunts that Peta pulls- they are actually a wonderful .. I mean INCREDIBLE organization that has rescued thousands upon thousands of animals. They are quietly doing their amazing work and don’t get enough credit.

In their magazine I get they recently had an article about one of Vick’s rescue dogs and how he was re trained and going to a good home. Their work is just brilliant.

Also a friend of mine who worked with FlOCK in Las Vegas (who tried to help them but saw they had way too many rescue cats and some were dying on the property) Well Best friends came in and rescued them ALL. Every last one.

I have worked with non profs for over 20 years (since my teens) and while I think that HSUS is great and PETA has their place I think I can say that Best Friends is the best out of ALL of them.

I’d take a sec and follow that link Parrish gave above and check them out.

    Peace

great what she does, but no need to trash Peta. Abused fighting dogs could make less then perfect pets with risks that you cant calcualte. With shelters so full, i can understand such a practical solution to euthanise some dogs.
Best Animal Society looks great and are def doing a great job as far as i can see, but are they all vegans ?
I mean, its easy to trash Peta, but at least they are all vegans and try to do the best for animals in any way of their daily life.

Interesting that she denounces PETA so harshly, yet still seemed to have a great interview with them. I guess the Vick incident really turned her off.

Neko Case is an amazing singer and songwriter. If you haven’t heard her, go find her song “Hold On” or “Star Witness”. Almost impossible to not get hooked.

And yes – she DOES speak her mind! Love her!

How are they keeping track of this though?

    I agree with her. LOL!

PETA does some good things, but the fact that they euthanize healthy — yes, HEALTHY — animals is inexcusable and total bs. Human civilization led to domestication of these animals which led to their overpopulation (not to mention how humans overpopulation is a much bigger problem), but you don’t see PETA advocating putting humans to sleep, which should be the logical conclusion. Their argument is simply nonsensical. I, myself, am vegan, and I’m not thrilled with animal consumers, but I’d rather support Neko Case than PETA any ol’ day.
