48610ac84865f1OK, well he might not be VEG yet, but thanks to new White House assistant chef Sam Kass we can rest assured that President Barack Obama will getting his local eat on!

Kass has a background in environmentally-conscious food and previously ran a home cooking service that was built around using food from local farms.  He also spent time working at Avec restaraunt in Chicago where chef-owner Paul Kahan says:

”The cool thing about Sam is that he’s very active, very involved with issues that relate to food. His goal has always been to improve the world from a food standpoint.”

From Avec he went on to Inevitable Table which serves to promote ”a healthy lifestyle that focuses on the quality and flavor of food to encourage good eating habits.” And last year headed up the kitchen at Chicago’s Jane Addams Hull-House Museum. Chicago chef and food historian Barbara Kuck, a member of the American Culinary Federation recalls:

“It was amazing how you could just have this one bowl of soup and it was like nothing you had ever eaten. Sam would buy the ingredients from the farmers’ market. He is very accessible and down to earth, very enthusiastic about organic food and all the food issues that we are facing.”

So there you have it! True, we can’t include Mr. President on the VEG team yet, but at least we know that Obama will be eating local food and supporting environmentally-sound agriculture. It’s a step in the right direction.
