I’m doing foot squeezes and foot rubs when the contractions hit…Ok… The midwife is here now and a few family members. Feels like a scene from the color purple. She’s dialated to 8 1/2 centimeters. Getting closer. She says she feels like she’s ready to push. Feb 1. 2009 my first child, my daughter was born at 1:30 pm exactly. Its the happiest day of my life.”

    if i ever have a baby, i will definitely be squeezing that thing out on my own living room floor after watching “the business of being born”. women should be more empowered to have babies naturally. we’ve been doing it for millennia!

    Its wonderful to hear positive natural birth stories in the media. We need more of these kinds of stories and less that make birth sound like some disease afflicting the female body.

    Right on! That is great. I squeezed my baby out in my living room (in a pool of water) and it was the best thing I have ever done. Happy to see it getting some attention.

    What if there had been complications to the birth? What if the baby or the mother had needed immediate medical attention? What if caesarean section would’ve been needed?

    Sounds pretty irresponsible to take unnecessary risks like this, however small. Will she also deny her child vaccinations since they’re not “natural” and and people have managed without them for millennia?

    fbr – hopefully she has weighed the pros/cons of each vaccine and uses that to decide for/against each vaccine.

    The death rates for newborn infants and mothers is lower in countries where homebirths with midwives are the standard and not the exception.

    I love hearing stories like this! It gives me hope that one day our insurance companies and hospitals will encourage natural home births. If I had the money to hire a midwife I would have had a homebirth too!

    That is WONDERFUL!! I had my 3 babes the same way…the last one was even a water birth! My husband is incredibly supportive of this and all things natural…to the point where he “lectures” his pregnant co-workers about what they should be doing!

    Midwives ALWAYS have a Plan B in place in case a different scenario unfolds, fbr.

    Way to go, Erykah!!!

    It’s so exciting when a homebirth is in the news! Congrats to Erykah and Jay! To be able to do it, (safely, of course, no midwife would deliver a baby at home if mother and baby were not healthy) and where you feel the most comfortable.
    I had my three at home and wouldn’t change the experiences for the world.

    fbr and anyone else who is wondering – research has shown that for low-risk mothers, homebirth is just as safe, if not safer than hospital birth.

    r- you are correct. The U.S. typically ranks 23rd-25th in infant mortality of all developed countries. Nutshell: we spend more money than every other country on healthcare and have close to the worst outcomes. Going to the hospital to have a baby with a surgeon observing is not working.

    Kudos to Erykah for doing her research and making an informed choice.

    Erykah is an awesome lady for many reasons. She is connected with truth. She gets more and more awesome. She is such a great role model. And she makes amazing music. Her new album feels like some kind of awakening. I highly recommend it.
