“I miss it. The last cigarette I smoked was the day I found out I was pregnant. I had to sit down and smoke one final cigarette. It’s such a beautiful thing. I’m so pissed off it gives you cancer. Cigarettes were my upper, they were my downer. I would think with them, write with them. I just love them so much. But then, once you have children, if you’ve witnessed a death like I did with my father, you just can’t. But I’ve decided that when I’m about 70 I’m going to start smoking again. Why not? I can’t wait!”

– Actress Gwyneth Paltrow in a recent interview with ELLE magazine. So I guess she’s down with lung cancer as a great way to go? Ugh. All this from someone who dishes advice on “healthy living strategies”.

Ms. Paltrow is a contradiction of sorts…does she even believe her own message of good health?

No matter, the point is that she doesn’t smoke and if she wants to be honest about still craving it, I’m sure many former smokers can relate…

You know, I love Gwyneth and I’m so happy that she’s a fan of natural health and alternative therapies but I’m so disappointed that she would call smoking “beautiful”. It’s such a contradiction to the lifestyle she promotes and certainly not a good message to put out there – especially for the younger audience that looks up to her.

As Catherine said, at least she’s honest about it, which I can respect. I just can’t, in any way, agree with her message here.

lol, i thought i was the only one who made that kind of promise to myself to get myself to quit! you’d think someone would have come up with a cigarette that doesn’t have any negative health effects by now!

  • ckwebgrrl

I’m glad she’s being honest about how tough it can be to quit. And in thirty years, she’ll have more reasons to continue to abstain (maybe including grandkids!)

I have a hard time saying “I’ll NEVER do” this or that. I’m hoping the rest of my life is a long time and I think shorter term goals are an easier place to start.

*headdesk* Smoking is beautiful? I think that woman is smoking something besides cigarettes to have made an idiotic comment like that. Dear Gaia. Admit it was tough to give up because it’s a freaking addiction, but don’t say it’s beautiful.

That’s the dumbest thing ever to say! One of my uncles passed away last year of lung cancer after smoking a lifetime – he passed away 3 months after being diagnosed, and he was only 55. So no, smoking is NOT a beautiful thing.

I’m a former smoker and I understand her perspective, but someone in the spotlight shouldn’t say things like that. She’s literally promoting smoking. She’s literally encouraging teens to get cancer. How does she live with herself?

i totally agree with aelys! both my grandpa and great-uncle died from smoking when i was very young, and with all those machines around them and the odd color of their skin and the way they rasped when they spoke…smoking is not becutiful, it is disgusting, sickening and just plain ugly! if i could go back in time and tell them fifty years ago to NOT SMOKE, i would so do it.

she is just a stupid frickin’ idiot….

she thinks so low of herself that she would continue to kill herself DESPITE her fathers “horrible” death if she DIDNT have kids?!?

I despise her more with every post i read about her. Stupid tw*t

  • http://www.jessimonster.wordpress.com Jessica

I can get down with what she’s saying. I too quit smoking when I found out I was pregnant, and I miss it sometimes. I know I’m better off without it, its not worth starting again, but some days, man, I miss it. I think that’s all she’s trying to say. If you’ve ever been addicted to something, like really, seriously addicted, you’d probably be able to relate too.

She is a hypocrite. She says she’s vegetarian but she eats meat. she says someone draped a fur on her during a shoot she didn’t know but she has fur shoes on. I don’t trust her or believe anything she says. she’s pathetic. and steph your post was great ;)

  • pleinelune

    She’s a real comedian…
She doesn’t eat meat, or to clarify: she doesn’t eat anything with four legs, but anyone who’s seen her on that show on Spain will know she eats just about everything else. It’s her choice, but she’s always referring to herself as a vegetarian (sometimes an ‘almost vegetarian’). You eat meat, fine, but don’t pretend you don’t.

Now she says she loves smoking and wouldn’t have stopped were it not for her father passing away. But, yes, she’ll smoke again just in time to pass on some beautiful second-hand smoke to her future grand-children.

Yes, she’s healthy, forgive me, beautiful. Once again, we’ve been GOOPed…
