Pompous Treehugger Ass Given Spotlight On Wife Swap

Ah, Wife Swap: The sad, popular, reality television series on ABC that people somehow decide participating in is a great idea. It’s kind of like someone saying they need to reveal something to you on Jerry Springer, and you replying, “Hey, why not? What’s the worst that could happen?”

Anyways, on the latest episode of Wife Swap — in which polar-opposite families switch moms — we were treated to Stephen Fowler, a venture capitalist, and Renee Stephens, a weight-loss therapist; and their disastrous match with a family from a rural Missouri town. Fowler, quite plainly, was a certified ass — rubbing the Missouri wife’s lack of education into her face repeatedly. He also (probably for the benefit of the program) wears nothing but “Treehugger” and “Solar” t-shirts. That’s a minor association, but unfortunately it strengthens stereotypes that environmentalists are pompous jerks. Thanks, Fowler!

As a result of the program, Fowler publicly apologized and resigned from the boards of two environmental nonprofits on which he served. Like I said, who the hell thinks going on this program is a good idea? Check out some highlights from the episode after the jump…

  1. I ashamed of this guy being English. What a small minded guy he proved to be. Part of being intelligent is knowing how to treat people with respect and humility regardless of their background, education, look, etc.

She was far more open minded, and a much better human being, than he proved to be.

  2. That guy’s not a tree hugger – he’s a douchebag.

  3. I agree with Misty, that guy represents the worst in humanity today: he’s arrogantly close-minded, lacking in any compassion, judgmental, and his children are clearly unhappy and lonely. I only hope that when they grow up they will learn how not be behave after watching their arrogant jackass of a father singlehandedly illustrate what is wrong with society today.

  4. that guy was so brutal to her, and abusive to his kids as well. i am so glad that he’s suffering some consequences, as he made environmentalism look like a vicious joke. coming from the bay area, i have to say he isn’t alone in his neurotic combination of an arrogant lack of humanity and so-called concern for the planet.

  5. Scary… very scary. And his wife is a life coach? Even scarier! I hope she loses all of her clients and both of them get a humbling reality check.

  6. He needs to grow up.

  7. Wow it is truly a shame when people like his sorry ass make a bad name for treehugger etc. What an A hole. I learned long ago just because someone is solar, eco, veggie etc doesn’t mean they’re nice. I’ve been fortunate to meet mostly good kind funny honest people in the “movement” but there are always exceptions like this ahole.

  8. OMG! There are too many things to say about how horribly ignorant, rude, and conceited this guy is. I definitely wouldn’t have been able to put up with his bullshit if I had to spend that much time with him. Poor kids.
