Is The 2009 Academy Awards Show Ignoring The Environment?

For the past two years, organizers for the Academy Awards have been eager to wear their green hearts on their sleeves — even going so far as to include a section of the official website dedicated to what was happening behind the scenes to reduce environmental impact.

This year? We can’t find anything.

Besides the Global Green Pre-Oscar Bash kicking off tomorrow night, there’s very little in 2009 that mimics the green themes of 2008 or 2007. Gone is the list of eco-efforts from the main site, gone are the past partnerships with the Natural Resources Defense Council, and definitely say goodbye to carbon offsets in place of luxury gift bags.

One small glimmer of hope remains, however, that the Academy Awards has moved beyond publicizing its green and instead is just incorporating it as business as usual. In a land where anything relatively news worthy gets a press release, however, this somehow doesn’t seem realistic. As Jon Stewart said during last year’s Academy Awards, “This is the environmentally-conscious green Oscars. So tonight our presenters will be walking all the way to the microphones.”

Sadly, this year, that may truly be all we get.

  1. Ugh… I wish I could say I’m surprised. With all of the financial cutbacks that have been happening in TV production over the past several months, the big networks are continuing to make (seemingly) ineffective, cheapskate decisions. I’m assuming that the network brass (along with so many others) have that outdated notion that all things “eco” must come at an extreme mark-up. an incredibly short-sited & irresponsible decision on their part… setting a poor example for sure. boo!

  2. They should’ve kept the carbon offset gifts.

Jon Steward = Jon Stewart, right?

  3. and btw… hilarious artwork on this one!
