I think this is awful. The owner gave Travis a Xanax earlier that day for his anxiety behavior. How does she know how he's going to react? It was definitely her fault for everything that happened to her friend. She should never have a wild animal as a pet, even if she thought she could trust him. He was still wild. Then she stabbed him before the police shot him. It could have all been avoidable if she would have had more sense than she did.

I think this is awful. The owner gave him a Xanax (tranquilizer) earlier that day to calm him down. What if it had a reaction to him (since he's a chimp) and he reacted violently? Wouldn't it be the owner's fault for her friend getting mauled?

"Destroyed"? Try "killed," "murdered," etc. You "destroy" property, not a life.

(And yes, I realize that dictionary.com lists "to kill" as one definition for "destroy," but when's the last time you heard the phrase "destroy" applied to the killing of a human?)

This whole situation just pissed me off. It was reported somewhere that she had give him sleeping pills and tea to calm him down that night cause he wanted to go out.

yeah...i would TOTALLY give my "child" some freaking sleeping pills when they get rambunctious...and a lot of good it did this poor guy in the end anyway.

I WISH they would charge her with something...maybe at least laws will get changed to prevent this from happening again.

Erin I agree with you. The 'owner' of the chimp needs to be charged. It's the only sensible outcome, in justice to the ape and to the now faceless victim.

Thanks for the link to the local paper article Erin, I agree make marijuana legal and keep the chimps in their natural habitat! This story is just a jumble of avoidable mistakes, it seems the more I read about it the more it amazes me that so many people allowed for this to happen! She was given a permit even though the chimp was too large, he had lyme disease and she continued to keep him in her home knowing the effects of that disease on the nervous system. Giving him xanax laced tea and calling her friend to help her instead of someone that has experience with animals. Even the level that she personifies him was dangerous! Yes chimps share about 90-99% of our genome....but there are essential differences on that last percent that cannot be over looked! Wow what a clusterfuck this whole story is!

Yes Hil except the commish decided to overlook the fact Travis was over 3x the allowed weight. See here in a local conn. article

http://thestamfordtimes.com/story/465213

She was grandfathered in. The states need to change the law so that no exotic pets can be owned. It's safer that way for the people AND the pets.

I'm a Libertarian and believe in freedom but NOT when it hurts someone else. Make marijuana legal and many of the other silly illegal things that aren't killing people but owning tigers and primates (and monkeys?) ridiculous!

From what I have read it was perfectly legal for her to own the chimp. In Conn. all that is required is a permit that she had obtained legally. I agree that having wild animals as a pet is just a bad idea all around! The domesticated animals that are commonly kept as pets like dogs and cats have been around people for hundreds and hundreds of years, and even they can hurt their owners sometimes, but not like a chimp can.
