Yet another celebrity is planning on taking their living space off-grid! In this case, it’s Richard Dreyfuss and his massive green renovation of a 6,000 sf home in San Diego. The award-winning actor is planning to strip the newly-purchased home to its studs and beams and incorporate the latest in high-tech green renewable energy into its structure. Somewhere, Ed Begley Jr. is drooling…
Dreyfuss is hooking up with San Diego firm S.K.I.N., which specializes in sustainable design, to mold the renovation using computer-monitored solar panels and foil insulation. On-site water storage and sustainable landscaping is also expected to significantly reduce water consumption. San Diego Gas & Electric has chosen the innovative renovation project as one of three case studies so far for its countywide Advanced Home program. From the article,
“We had two goals: Get off the grid as soon as possible, and make of the home what the home itself wanted to be,” Richard Dreyfuss, 61, said in a recent interview. “The house as we bought it was in a state of no state. It’s like a piece of clay that you can make something of. I don’t think of myself as an environmental guy. I am a citizen,” he said. “And it’s a big difference.”
Besides the green features, the home will also have something that I’ve been wanting in a home of my own for a very long time: a secret panel in the Dreyfuss library that will lead to a hidden room. Too cool!
