Ecorazzi Asks: What’s Your Favorite Faux Meat Product?

April 3rd 2009

While a lot of people enjoyed our April Fool’s joke over Al Gore’s new line of vegan frozen foods, a few more were a bit dismayed that it actually wasn’t true. Vegan nubs, they said, would be delicious.

Which got me to thinking: What’s your favorite faux-meat product currently available in the supermarket? I’ve recently discovered Morningstar Farm’s delicious pizza burgers and also dig their nuggets. I’d love to hear some recommendations of other products out there that I might be missing. Or perhaps some that you wish were a bit better.

In the meantime, we’ll keep pushing for Gore to release his Organic Soy Poppers. MMMM…..

  1. My favorite is Mornigstar’s Mini Corndogs:)! They taste pretty darn close to real corn dogs and I don’t feel guilty after eating them.

  2. I’m a Quorn believer. The naked cutlets are the best!

  3. I really like Amy’s All American Veggie Burgers or any seitan products!

  4. i was just going to say the exact same thing hil did! morning star mini corndogs hands down. granted i do more raw now and try not to do grains or too much soy but those things are great!

    E

  5. E- it must be our Indiana upbringing ;)

  6. I agree… I try to avoid them as much as possible, but Morning Star mini corn dogs are pretty awesome

  7. Quorn, all the way!

Turk’y roast, naked cutlets – anything without breading.

  8. Trader Joe’s Meatless Meatballs are SO good.

  9. VegUSA’s vegan spareribs with citrus sauce

    Whole Foods vegan meatballs

  10. I try to avoid them too but I’m addicted to Quorn. My favourite though, is Tivall’s Slicing Sausage. Mmmmm.

  11. Veggie Patch hot dogs (Jalepeno, Spiced Apple)

Quorn products are super good, but a little too expensive for me most times

Morningstar mushroom lovers burgers if they don’t stock the pizza lovers

Gimmie Lean Sausage (comes in a cookie-dough-like package, you mahe patties by hand and fry them… mmmmm

yves Smart deli slices — so easy for lunches- but only the bologna flavor– plus U can say “It’s Phony Baloney” hahaha

  12. Gardein vegan chicken and vegan stuffed turkey is unbelievable…I haven’t met a single non-vegan/non-vegetarian that doesn’t think they are awesome as well.

  13. I love Boca’s Flame Grilled burgers and their Italian sausage. I love Morningstar’s hot dogs and breakfast sausage patties. For veggie burgers I like Amy’s Chicago. I used to like Morningstar’s chick’n patties and nuggets but I’ve lost my taste for them. Anyone suggest a tasty chick’n patty?

  14. I haven’t tried too many things, but I always have Gimmie Lean ’sausage’ on hand, Morning star sausage patties and Morning Star corn dogs (not the mini’s) are really good too…. and MS Chikn nuggets. I like food.

  15. I used to like Quorn, but they have eggs in it. I do like Tofurky & Field Roast sausages for flavor and texture, but they do have a lot of oil in them. Better to make your own!

  16. I am the *only* person who likes these, but I love Loma Linda Linketts. They’re hot dogs in a can (which, I think, is what turns people off) and they’re so good!

My mom swears by Yves hot dogs and I like SmartDogs for things like faux franks and beans.

  17. I LOVE Helen’s Kitchen tofu steaks. They are the only burger-type replacer I will eat. All the others have a weird texture and seem to get gooey and squishy really quick. Otherwise, I like Morningstar’s bacon alternative; I can’t eat much of it because I’m allergic to citric acid (stupid preservatives), but I like to have one or two pieces every so often!

  18. morningstar farms chick’n nuggets & sausage patties. i’ve been wanting to branch out, but they are just SOOO good. plus, they make them in my hometown. anyone have any vegan options they like??

  19. I love Morningstar Farms Sausage Links and Bacon. Trader Joe’s veggie meatballs are another favorite, and Field Roast Grain Meat Co. Celebration Roast is my favorite thing to eat during the holidays!

  20. Morningstar Spicy Black Bean burger. The rest of their flavors are great too.

  21. Lightlife Smart Bacon, which tastes great on my second-favorite product, Boca Burgers!

  22. I usually buy my analogues online from Veggie Brothers, but I used to love the Amy’s Texas Burgers.

I also make my own seitan.

  23. hil,

must be the indiana upbringing! where were you raised? (me, columbus) also have you tried the regular corn dogs too? both are unbelievable :)

    E

  24. E- I grew up in Merrillville (the Region:)) I haven’t tried the regular yet but I bet they are great!

  25. White wave seitan is so versatile. Great for sautees, casseoroles, stir-frys and so much more! BTW, check your labels! Not all Quorn prodcuts are vegan!

  26. Ah yes I know that area. Where do you live now Hil? (if you care to share ;)

    E

  27. veggiebrothers.com is amazing!!! never had a bad bite. also, I love trader joe’s meatless meatballs.

  28. E- I am in Seattle now…a lot easier to be green here that’s for sure!

  29. Trader Joe’s Veggie Riblets – Just like a McRib!! (you know, if you like that sort of thing, which I did, in my pregan days)

  30. Boca vegan chicken patties and Boca breakfast sausages are the best! I also love Veggie Brothers hot wings and Mah Wah’s citris spare ribs!!! yum!

  31. I love Boca chicken patties and agree with everyone on the Morningstar Mini Corn Dogs.

  32. You have to be careful with Morningstar farms products, not all of them are vegan. Actually, more than half of what I find usually has egg or milk in it.

  33. Help!!!!Can anyone help me with a phone number to find vegUSA products anywhere??
