Seems our earlier suspicious have been confirmed.

Condé Nast, publisher of Vanity Fair, has announced that their annual — and popular — green issue will no longer be published; ending three years of informative, beautiful, and sometimes controversial coverage. According to the UK Independent, VF argues that the environment has become so integral to the news agenda that there is no longer a need for a dedicated issue. “Vanity Fair remains committed to covering the environment, and we’ll spread our coverage throughout the year, instead of relegating the bulk of it to a specific issue” a spokeswoman says.

As suspected, the current economic downturn has also played a role in Condé Nast’s move. “With so much else going on relating to the global financial crisis, we have been focusing on that of late,” they added. Some argue, however, that now, more than ever, we need attention paid to green issues. “The recession makes the environmental cause more, not less relevant,” said Zac Goldsmith, a former editor of The Ecologist. “We can emerge from this recession with a green economy where green choices currently available only to the wealthy become available to everyone.”

Vanity Fair may have dropped the green ball but The Source hasn’t, go figure. The King of Trill and 1/2 of U.G.K. (RIP PIMP C), Bun B will be gracing the covers of their April-May 2009 green issue.

Vanity Fair needs to step their game up.

So let me get this right… they are saying that because everyone is talking about the environment that it seems unnecessary to give it its own issue still?

I think that’s ridiculous-that’s like saying because Obama is the P.O.T.U.S. now, we shouldn’t observe Black History Month…

That’s too bad. I hope the VF spokepeoples are speaking the truth when they say that they’ll cover green issues year-round, instead.

I have all three covers. It does sadden me that VF thinks the environment only needs “special” attention.

    :(

Conde Nasties still sell the same crap to the masses… They just launched a new magazine called LOVE which I reviewed on the Greenloop blog.

They have not learned a single thing, still using virgin paper, toxic inks, no recycling at the newsstands, ads for SUVs, useless endless trips to fantasy stress free lands, pure excess and lack of concern for most living things.

Their green issues were a PR stunt, a bitter pill, which left true greens with a sour after taste. So rather than walk the talk, address the real issues, and try producing a genuinely green project, they pulled the plug on Domino, and yanked the green issues, only to avoid further criticism, thinking that with their head in the sand, their circulation won’t get worse.

Truth is, because magazines are not addressing issues of sustainability, other than a rare choice few, the more educated and trendy bunch, who always lead the way, are spending their media junky time online, sparing their pocket book.

But I love print, print is king, print is beautiful, so we’re finding alternative ways of producing fabulous fashion magazines, while the Conde Nasties of this world, are dying to join General Motors, because they just don’t f***** listen! Because they’re royalty, and us lowly peasants who care for the planet are just meager savages they need to humor so we keep spending the five bucks!

Why did they bother hiring Summer Rayne Oakes as a consultant? To clip her wings?
